Grahame Sydney Paintings at Pataka

29 Tuesday Nov 2011

Posted by KCPS in News

I recommend dropping in to Pataka in Porirua to see their exhibition of recent Graham Sydney work: Down South, Recent Paintings 2001-2011. The paintings of Central Otago and Antarctica are beautiful, and well worth studying for their composition and pictorial aspects. The exhibition is open until 6 February 2012.

End of Year Awards Function

24 Thursday Nov 2011

≈ Comments Off on End of Year Awards Function

What a great night it was. Our first big occasion at the Otaihanga Boating Club, and the place was decorated and buzzed with festive spirit.

Huge thanks to many people for making it all happen – Debbie Ayres (in particular), Stuart Ayres (including for photos), Nick Ayres, Karyn Crocker, Ian Linning, Jenny Gordon, Peter Beddek, Roy Opie from OBC, and also those  who helped up afterwards including Murray Woolcock. The caterers “Before & Afters” put on a splendid meal.

Thank you Simon Woolf, for once again being the MC  and judging the “best of year” competition, and for your long-time support and friendship over many years for our club/society.

And now … the envelopes please.

The Future of Judging?

17 Thursday Nov 2011

Which of these two portraits do you prefer?

According to this article in Technology Review, Xerox has developed a system to automatically analyse images and choose those which are aesthetically pleasing. It chose the one on the left.

You can see lots more examples of the Xerox Aesthetic Quality Image Search here.

So, is a Xerox Machine the future of photographic competition judging?

≈ Comments Off on Canon Online Success

Congratulations to Shona Jaray! It’s just been announced that she came 8th in Round 5 of the PSNZ Canon Online competition, with her “Coal Pit Dam” image.

This is the second success for Kapiti Coast Photographic Society members in the Canon Online competition this year, following my image “Orkney Vista” placing in the previous round.

AGM Tuesday 8 November

Up Close with the Gannets (c)Stuart Ayres

Our AGM will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday 8 November in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “I might get arm-twisted into joining the committee if I turn up.” Relax – we have sufficient nominations already. So you can come along and enjoy the formalities, including consideration of my President’s Report (now available under RESOURCES).

The AGM will be followed by a presentation showing many of the lovely images that were taken by those who went on the field trip to the Gannets in October.

And don’t forget to bring along your entries for the “best of year” competition.  You can submit one each of a colour print, monochrome print, and digital image – these must have been accepted in one of our four Salons this year. The winners will be announced by judge Simon Woolf who is MC at our end of year function on 22 November – tickets are $25 each and available for sale from any committee member. Partners welcome too.

PSNZ Membership Offer

01 Tuesday Nov 2011

Posted by KCPS in PSNZ Notices

≈ Comments Off on PSNZ Membership Offer

Have you considered joining the Photographic Society of New Zealand? It’s well worthwhile.

We are an affiiliated society, so if you join PSNZ you get $5 off your membership subscription for KCPS. You will also receive a free copy of New Zealand Camera 2012 when it is printed next year.

But wait, there’s more.  PSNZ is running a membership promotion in association with Canon. This offer is for all new members who join PSNZ from 1 October 2011 and before 31 December 2011, plus for all existing members who renew their subs by 31 December (for 2012).

Your name will be entered into the prize draw for a Canon MG8250 printer plus a Canon PIXMA Creative Pack of paper, with a combined retail value of $650, kindly donated by Canon.

Subscription notices for 2012 for existing PSNZ members will be sent out in early November and you will be reminded of this offer. The Prize will be drawn in January and the winner notified by email. The winner’s name and possibly their photo with the Canon representative will also be displayed in Cameratalk and on the PSNZ website.
