Checking out the Otaihanga Boating Club

31 Monday Oct 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, News

Almost 25 members and family turned up during Sunday afternoon to check out the planned new venue for our meetings – the Otaihanga Boating Club.

It was a glorious afternoon, with Ian on the BBQ churning out sausages and onions, which were happily consumed in bread with Karyn’s special sauces, and washed down with liquid refreshments.

The setting is impressive, and even comes with built-in photographic opportunities – just imagine the sunsets from here.

The interior is spacious and suitable for our meetings .. it even includes a built-in overhead projector. However some thought will be needed on how best to display prints for our salons.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon, and all those who came were very positive and supportive of the planned move to this venue next year.

Sausage Sizzle and other Upcoming Events

Sausage Sizzle 30 October

Don’t forget the Sausage Sizzle at 3 pm on Sunday – come check out our planned new venue from next year.

AWARDS FUNCTION 22 November

Starting at the Sausage Sizzle, we’ll be selling tickets for our gala End of Year function, which will be held at the same venue, at 7 pm on Tuesday 22 November. $25 per ticket.

WORKSHOP 1 November

The next post-processing workshop is this Tuesday 1 November, at 6 Matipo Street, Waikanae. It’s the  follow up to the 4 October Mahara Place photographic exercise. Select an image from that photo-shoot that you would like to enhance, put it on a memory stick or CD, and bring it to this meeting.

Also would members who are conversant with enhancing programmes on their laptops please bring these to this meeting to show and help by demonstrating the secrets and mysteries of post-processing software techniques to other members.

Neil Gordon will be demonstrating Lightroom. Marshall Marsden will be demonstrating Serif Photo Plus, (a free downloaded programme.) Mike Brewer will be using Picasa (another freebie).

We can answer questions that arise from the discussion.

PS. It is helpful if members could wear shoes that they can slip off when they enter the “borrowed” house at 6 Matipo Street. This saves using a vacuum cleaner to clean up on Wednesday.

≈ Comments Off on Spring Salon Judging – Tuesday 25 October

Tracey Robinson

The main event for our regular 4th Tuesday meeting will be the judging of the spring salon. Tracey Robinson from Rotorua kindly stepped in at the last minute when the pre-arranged judge unexpectedly had an assignment in Australia. Tracey will not be able to be here in person, so we will read through her emailed ratings and comments.

The meeting will be at 7:30 pm Tuesday 25 October in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae. See you there.

While I have your attention – don’t forget our upcoming Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 30 October. And time is running out to enter the Jack Sprosen AV competition – entries must be in by 4 November.

Are you a bit daunted by taking photos of strangers in the street? Me too.  I recently ran across an excellent online article with some advice for people like us – a Coward’s Guide to Street Photography.Reading on Bench

This is one of many excellent articles at the Digital Photography School website. I highly recommend this site. It’s been added to the list of LINKS available via the top menu of this website.

Sausage Sizzle – Sunday 30 October 3-5 pm

12 Wednesday Oct 2011

Posted by KCPS in News, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Sausage Sizzle – Sunday 30 October 3-5 pm

We’ve got an extra, special event this month – a sausage sizzle at 3 pm on Sunday 30 October.

The venue is the new Otaihanga Boating Club facility, at about 19 Makora Road Otaihanga. Our committee has negotiated an excellent deal for the use of this fantastic facility from 2012, three Mondays (1st, 2nd and 4th) each month from February to November. We’ll be seeking endorsement of this decision at the AGM on 8 November.

This is your chance to come along and check out the new venue, while socialising with your fellow KCPS members in this lovely location overlooking the Waikanae River. Family are most welcome as well.  Sausages will be provided. BYO beverages of choice.

Spring Salon Entries Due

10 Monday Oct 2011

Posted by KCPS in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Spring Salon Entries Due

Don’t forget entries for the KCPS Spring Salon are due – please bring prints and entry forms along to our regular meeting, at 7:30 pm Tuesday 11 October in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae.

Digital entries should be emailed to kcps.entry@gmail.com – normally these are due by midnight Monday, but I’ll be happy to receive entries up until noon Tuesday this time.

The guest speaker at our Tuesday meeting is Joanna Piatek – this should be another very interesting presentation.

You will also get to see our set of six prints which won the Central Region interclub print competition, and the rather large engraved Palmerston Cup – better than the Webb Ellis Trophy in my view.

Shona Jaray and I can also give you a brief overview of the PSNZ Central Region Convention. On a lighter note, it did seem to be all a bit much for this ‘delegate” at the Tawhiti Museum on Saturday.

KCPS Success at Central Region

07 Friday Oct 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, News

Shona Jaray and I are at the PSNZ Central Region Convention – Expect the Unexpected – being hosted by the Stratford Camera Club.

We were thrilled to learn this evening that the KCPS Print Set won the inter-club competition for prints.  Congratulations to the following six Kapiti Coast Photographic Society members:

  1. Shona Jaray – “Sparsely Populated”
  2. Katie Beddek – “Blue, Green and Wharf”
  3. Hugh Scott – “Pastoral Panel”
  4. Carol Molineux – “Tarn Ridge”
  5. Peter Beddek – “Harbour Sunbeams”
  6. Neil Gordon – “Orkney Vista”
KCPS didn’t do quite so well in the interclub Digital Image competition. The new Aotearoa Philippines Photographic Society had a well-deserved win in that competition, with some stunning images.
But wait, there’s more. We have also had some individual successes:

Neil Gordon's "Orkney Vista" won Champion Print for the Interclub Print Sets competition.

Shona Jaray's "Catching the Light" won 1st prize for the Open Prints Section.

Shona Jaray's "Coalpit Dam" won 1st prize for the Open Digital Image section

Neil Gordon's "Arctic Tern" came 2nd in the Nature Digital Images.
