Free Nik Collection and Training

02 Saturday Apr 2016

Nik CollectionThe highly regarded Nik collection of plugins for image processing used to cost many hundreds of dollars.  Then Google bought them, and they came down to something like US$125 (what I paid three years ago).

Now the Nik plugins are free, and highly recommended, even though they are probably not going to get updated any more.  They work with Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture. You can go here to find out about them and download:  https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

Even better, there is now a free set of online videos providing training on the Nik plugins.  Go here to register and view the videos online or download them: http://greylearning.com/courses/nik-bundle

Posted by KCPS in Reminder, Useful Links

≈ Comments Off on Window Lit Portrait Advice – Winter Salon Entries Due Soon

Still working on that image for the set print them of “Window Lit Portrait” for the Winter Salon?

Here’s some useful advice you might like to review for that theme.

And don’t forget that the set digital theme is “Industrial Disease”.

Entries for the Winter Salon are due by Monday 10 August. Please – online entries must be in by 5 pm so that I have time to collate them all for the judge.

Monday 3 August Development Session

This Monday’s session is more for Advanced workers but all members are welcome to attend.

The topic is macro photography and lighting for macro – please bring your camera and lenses, and some (small!) subject matter to photograph.

Monday 10 August Print Selection

The main meeting on 10 August will be to select prints for the Wellington Interclub Print Battle, due to be held on Tuesday 8 September in Petone.

Bring along lots of prints, which at this stage may be any size, mounted or unmounted – if a small one is selected then there is time to get it enlarged and mounted etc.

KCPS needs to have one final image for each of the following subjects:

Intimate Moments
Let’s Make Music
Backlit
10 Square Yards
Window-lit Portrait
Industrial Disease
Inspiring Views
Stormy Weather
Architecture
Glassware

Flying Cameras – Meeting Report

14 Tuesday Oct 2014

≈ Comments Off on Flying Cameras – Meeting Report

What a great meeting we had last night.  Paul Wolffram came along to demonstrate and then talk about “Flying Cameras” (sometimes called drones, UAVs, quadcopters, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, etc.). Paul is a filmmaker, ethnomusicologist, and photographer currently working at Victoria University of Wellington Film Programme. He teaches production and specializes in documentary production and ethnographic film. It was cloudy, a bit gloomy at dusk, with a bit of wind, but the wind was no problem for Paul and his DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus.

Paul Setting Up

Paul Setting Up

It was an impressive demonstration. The gimbal system on the Phantom keeps it incredibly stable. The included camera can take 1080p video, or switch to taking 16 megapixel still images in Adobe DNG RAW. The remote control connects to the Phantom via radio, while a separate wifi link can be used to show a live view of what the camera is seeing on an iPhone or Android phone. Here’s a short video (taken with an iPhone 6) showing the initial takeoff and hovering around the Otaihanga Boating Club, before rapidly taking off over the Waikanae River. So long as it stays in line of sight, it can be controlled as far away as 3 km. But it must keep under an altitude of 400 ft.

Piloting The Phantom

After the demonstration, we went inside for a presentation by Paul all about “Flying Cameras” and his own experiences at learning to use the Phantom.  He showed us a beautiful short film “Free As A Bird” he made using it at Great Barrier Island.

Paul is about to return to Papua New Guinea to work on a documentary feature on sorcery practices, where he will use the Phantom for taking video (and no doubt impressing the locals with his own skills). A big thank-you to Paul for taking the time to demonstrate and talk about Flying Cameras.  Great stuff – there’s an exciting future and lots of opportunities for using these for photography and film-making.

Hawk Attaching DroneThis Monday’s meeting is not to be missed. Paul Wolffram will give a presentation on drone photography and some of his experiences. The weather is looking good, so we plan to have an outside demonstration to start with (sunset is 7:38 pm).  Let’s hope we don’t have any interference like this hawk taking out a drone!

Entries for the Spring Salon are also due on Monday. Online entries close off at 5 pm; bring any prints with an included printout of your online entry.

Peg Griffin Funeral

A reminder that Peg Griffin will be farewelled and her long life celebrated at 2 pm on Monday at St Paul’s Church, on the corner of Kapiti Road and Langdale Avenue.

Turnbull Library Talk and other News

27 Saturday Sep 2014

≈ Comments Off on Turnbull Library Talk and other News

We had a fascinating talk from Claire Viskovic (yes, Alison’s daughter) last Monday night, all about the Imaging Services at the Turnbull Library (part of the National Library of New Zealand).  She talked about the work they do, and the evolving systems for making images of the collection, which have moved on from very basic cameras and scanners to a Phase One IQ180. This has a sensor size of 53.7 by 40.4 mm and can capture a 10328 by 7760 pixel image.

Claire showed many beautiful and interesting examples, including the fore-edge painting and gilding on the covers of old books:

Foredge painting 1597799 Romola - George Eliot 1880

One of the largest items they have captured is the “Chronological Tree” of New Zealand history, written and drawn in incredible detail By James KcKain Meek in around 1876. It was digitally captured in 13 pieces and stitched together partly using Photoshop, but partly by hand.

Chronological Table

The result can be seen online via this link and viewed in great detail here.

All the image files are saved as TIFFs.  Many items are available to view and download via the National Library Collections website at http://natlib.govt.nz/collections.

It was a very interesting talk and insight into the work done by the team – thanks Claire.

Rules About Taking Photos in a Public Place in New Zealand

From time to time there is discussion about this.  The NZ Police have a very clear set of guidelines on their website here, which are repeated below:

It is generally lawful to take photographs of people in public places without their consent. However, you must not film or take photos of people if they are in a place where they can expect privacy (such as a public changing area or toilet) and that person:

  • is naked, in underclothes, showering, toileting etc
  • is unaware of being filmed or photographed
  • has not given consent to be filmed or photographed.

You should not take photos of people if:

  • they are in a place where they would expect reasonable privacy and publication would be highly offensive to an objective and reasonable person
  • it has potential to stop other people’s use and enjoyment of the same place
  • you have no legitimate reason for taking the film or photos.

However, you can take and/or publish photos or film of people where there is no expectation of privacy, such as a beach, shopping mall, park or other public place.

Creative Focus 2014 Competition

Autumn Salon Online Entries Close 5 pm Monday

09 Friday May 2014

≈ Comments Off on Autumn Salon Online Entries Close 5 pm Monday

A reminder that online entries will close at 5 pm sharp on Monday 12 May. This is so that they can all be compiled and handed in at the meeting starting at 7:30 pm that night.  Go to https://kcps.org.nz/salon-entry-form/ to submit your entry.

The meeting on Monday evening will be about recent PSNZ National Convention, held in Blenheim.  I’ll give a talk about how it all went, but also invite others from the club who attended to comment as well.

Last Development Group Meeting 5 May – Workflows

Hugh Scott did a great presentation to around 15 members all about general workflows for adding and processing new images from your camera, focussing on Capture NX2 (for Nikon).  I followed up with some details on the workflow for Lightroom 5.  For an overview, this video from Adobe might be helpful.  The “Digital Asset Management” book by Peter Krogh was also mentioned – here’s a link to his site which has various resources plus books for sale.

Last KCPS Meeting 28 April – Alison Viskovic FPSNZ and Waikanae Estuary

Alison Viskovic FPSNZ

Alison Viskovic FPSNZ

It was really interesting to hear from Alison all about her journey to create her set, and be successful in gaining an FPSNZ.

We also had a slide show of almost 100 images that have been submitted so far for consideration for our August Waikanae Estuary Exhibition at the Paraparaumu Library.  Further images will be most welcome, and can be submitted via https://kcps.org.nz/waikanae-estuary-exhibition/. The deadline is 26 May.

This was followed by a short talk from a guest, Mik Peryer, who literally wrote the book about the Estuary.  He related the love story of Thomas and Henrietta. Thanks, Mik.

Photographic News – Sony and Adobe

05 Thursday Sep 2013

Posted by KCPS in News, Useful Links

≈ Comments Off on Photographic News – Sony and Adobe

Some interesting news items today that may be of interest to KCPS members.

Sony Clipon Cameras for Mobile Photography

Just after the meeting on Smartphone Photography rumours appeared of some new Sony “clip on” cameras, that use a mobile phone for control and display.

They have now been announced – the Sony QX10 and the Sony QX100.

DPReview’s take is worth a read, and particularly their in-depth look at the QX100. This is US$500 and uses the same sensor as the Sony RX-100II. However it only produces jpegs, and has no manual control, so seems a bit hobbled. The RX-100II – which is priced around US$750 – can connect to a mobile with wifi or NFC and transfer images, and is actually smaller, and does do RAW and manual controls.

So these are very interesting and innovative new products from Sony, but whether they will do well is another question.

Photoshop and Lightroom Creative Cloud

Controversially, Adobe recently moved to a regular subscription for their Creative Cloud Suite. This was quite expensive if all you wanted was Photoshop CC. They have just announced a new, special deal, just for photographers which sounds, on the face of it, quite attractive; especially for those who have yet to update to Lightroom 5.

It will be US$10 a month (annual commitment) for both Lightroom 5.2 (when it’s out soon) and Photoshop CC, plus some other benefits.  You have to have a licence already for Photoshop CS3 or later. See the link for more details.

I haven’t seen pricing for New Zealand (in Australian $ usually) – hopefully that would be around AU$10 a month too.
