“Best of Year” Entries Due – and Development Group Monday

31 Wednesday Oct 2012

BEST OF YEAR ENTRIES

With our AGM coming up on Monday 12 November it’s time to get your “Best of Year” entries in. This can now be done online – head to the SALON ENTRY page and look lower down for the link to the entry form.

There are no grades for this competition. You can enter just one digital image and one print. Each of these must have been entered into one of the four Salons held during the year, or be fundamentally based on it (for example, small improvements in line with judge’s comments at the original competition are acceptable). The competition will be judged by Simon Woolf who will present the results at our End of Year Function on 26 November.

DEVELOPMENT GROUP MONDAY 5 NOVEMBER

The last Development Group meeting for the year will be at 7:30 pm on Monday 5 November.

I hope you’ve been getting on with your homework, which is to  work on photographing just one or two small objects. Try several versions of each, and be ready to talk about the issues you struck, how you tried to deal with them, and bring the resulting questions you still have. Then we can have a good round-table session offering help.  The images don’t need to have a lot of post processing. It’s the taking stage of things we will be concentrating on. Like trying to capture photos of my little friend Justin Beaver here.  See you Monday.

Report on Spring Salon Judging

23 Tuesday Oct 2012

We had a ball last night.

“Kapiti Ball of Light” – ©Ian Rotherham

A big thank-you to Ian Rotherham for coming down from Palmerston North to present his results of judging our Spring Salon, and for a presentation of his own impressive portfolio.

We then had a lot of fun with Ian explaining his personal project of photographing “balls of light”, and doing a real-live demonstration out on the lawn by the river while we all watched.

The Spring Salon gallery of Honours and Highly Commended images is now available online.  A special well done to Gavin Klee and Gary Moncrieff, whose four entries each received either Honours or Highly Commended, and to Barry Culling with three entries in this gallery.

Spring Salon Judging on Monday 22 October

≈ Comments Off on Spring Salon Judging on Monday 22 October

Have a great Labour Weekend, and come along for what looks like another excellent meeting. Hopefully it won’t disrupt any of your travel plans to be back in time for 7:30 pm on Monday, when Ian Rotherham will judge the final full salon for the year.

Ian is a lecturer at UCOL in Palmerston North. You can learn about his background and check out some of his work in the April 2012 issue of the free online f11 Magazine.

It’s sure to be a great evening hearing Ian’s comments and verdicts on our images, as well as seeing some of his own. And perhaps he’ll explain what he does with these balls of light he seems to have stored in his shed.

Get Your Entries in for the Jack Sprosen AV Competition by 16 November

18 Thursday Oct 2012

≈ Comments Off on Get Your Entries in for the Jack Sprosen AV Competition by 16 November

Time to be getting on with your entry for the Audio-Visual Competition for the Jack Sprosen Memorial Trophy.

Entries are now being received for this year’s competition. Entry into this competition is open to all PSNZ members, and to members of clubs affiliated to PSNZ.

Entries close on Friday 16 November 2012. Judging is on 25 November 2012.  Winning entries will be shown at the PSNZ National Convention in early May 2013 in Wellington.

Lots more details are available on the PSNZ website, including helpful guidance and where to download entry forms from.

It’s always useful to have a look at some examples when thinking about putting together an AV, but they tend to be hard to find because of concerns over copyright issues, particularly of music.

Here’s a few online AVs I found that you may find useful to look at, which I found via the Wantage Camera Club site.  “Morning Has Broken” on Vimeo, “A Night at the Opera” on Youtube, and an AV from 2012 on Vimeo. Enjoy.

Mark your diaries and plan to attend our end of year function – Monday 26 November at the Otaihanga Boating Club.  Festivities will kick off at 7 pm.

Tickets are $30 a person, which covers both dinner and liquid refreshments.  We’re delighted that Simon Woolf has agreed again to be MC for the night. Simon will also be judging the “best of year” entries that need to be submitted on 12 November.

Committee members all have tickets available, and will be getting in touch with KCPS members to sell them.  Partners and friends are welcome to come along as well. If you want, you can email me to let me know how many tickets you need and I’ll make sure that happens.

For those going, please email Debbie Ayres if you have any special dietary requirements, and we’ll make sure you are catered for.

This should be a great occasion and a nice way to finish off our photographic society’s year. Hope to see you all there!

Report on Members Exhibition

11 Thursday Oct 2012

Some 25 members enjoyed hearing from Marshall, Gary and David last Monday night. It made for a good mixture of older and newer members of our society.

Marshall had some fascinating stories about his early work with wet plate photography, and suggested viewing this youtube video. Although the system is the same as what he was using, the sizes of the glass he used ran from 8*10 up to 24*20 inches.

Gary showed some of his images (a lovely example is shown here), and David illustrated his conversion over the last few years into more than just snapshots.

Thanks to all three for sharing their images and stories.

Many of us were up by 6 am this morning and out to enjoy the morning light and sunrise behind Eastbourne. Gavin wins the prize for the biggest lens. Here he was trying to catch some kakariki in flight, with Ray providing helpful advice.

Dramatic Wellington Weather

06 Saturday Oct 2012

≈ Comments Off on Dramatic Wellington Weather

You can’t beat Wellington on a good day. Nor can you beat it on a dramatic weather day.

There’s been everything from sun to gale northerlies, and gale southerlies, and heavy showers. We’ve all managed to get out and about and capture some of the drama and the wildlife and the fantastic views from Matiu/Somes.

Here’s just one example of the view towards Wellington city as the southerly and showers arrived around 6 pm this evening.

A dozen KCPS members have arrived here safely, for an overnight stay and to take advantage of the many photo opportunities.

This is the beautiful view over Wellington Harbour as we plan the rest of the day.

Members’ Exhibition Monday & Spring Salon Entries Due

05 Friday Oct 2012

Posted by KCPS in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Members’ Exhibition Monday & Spring Salon Entries Due

At our next regular meeting on Monday 9 October we’ll get to hear from three or four of our members.  Marshall Marsden, Gary Moncrieff, David Blyth and perhaps Johanna Goudsblom (she may be away) will each tell us about their own photographic interests, and show us some of their images.

“Wairarapa Winter Morning” – Highly Commended, Novice Digital Image – ©David Blyth

This always provides a interesting insight into the passion we all share. One example that we may hear about is David’s image “Wairarapa Winter Morning”- which did very well for his first entry in the Winter Salon as a new member.

Don’t forget that entries for our spring Salon are also due – please use the online entry system. If you are submitting prints, then print out the details you’ll get from the email acknowledgement, and bring this along with your labelled prints on Monday evening.
