Exhibition Closes

27 Tuesday Sep 2011

≈ Comments Off on Exhibition Closes

The KCPS “Images Showcase 2011”, which was on at Kapiti Law in Waikanae from 28 July to 26 September, has now closed.

We had lots of good feedback, and many positive comments in the visitors’ book (see below).  There was just one sale – an image of Shona’s – but the main purpose of showcasing our talent and the Society was achieved.

Thanks to all involved.

The committee is actively considering the merits of another exhibition in 2012.

Our next meeting will be a Members’ Exhibition put on by the “Monochrome Darkroom” interest group. We will get to see seven vintage cameras – all from last century (and I don’t just mean the second half), as well as many fine monochrome prints.

The meeting will be at 7:30 pm Tuesday 27 September in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae. See you there.

We now have available on this site a Newsletter Archive with all the available newsletters for the last six years. The link is also available from the top menu.

KCPS

There have been 28 newsletters produced since 2008, when we have been the Kapiti Coast Photography Society.

WCC

Until 2007 we were the Waikanae Camera Club.  We have available 19 newsletters going back to September 2005.

These older newsletters were formatted so they could be printed side-by-side on two sides of A4 paper and then folded and stapled to make an A5 printed newsletter.  So what you see in the archive has pages in a non-obvious order.

Go check out this fascinating Newsletter Archive, and see our how club and society has evolved over this recent part of its long history.

Older Newsletters?

If anyone has soft copies of newsletters before September 2005 please let me know, and I’ll load them up as well.

Winter Salon Results

Many thanks to Lance Lawson, NZIPP, who judged the Winter Salon at our meeting on Tuesday 23 August 2011.  Lance is a commercial photographer in Wellington and we are grateful for the time he put in to considering the large number of entries, and for the insightful feedback he provided on the images at our meeting.

The competition recognised 10 Honours (Hon), 10 Highly Commended (HC), 21 Merit (M), and 13 Acceptance (A) awards.  Well done to everyone who entered the competition, and congratulations to all those who achieved awards.

Shona and Peter Support NZ Success in Four Nations

14 Wednesday Sep 2011

"Gentle Arches" by Shona Jaray

"Front Row" by Peter Beddek

Every year there is a Four Nations inter-society digital image competition between New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Canada.

This year, the eighty images put forward by PSNZ included “Gentle Arches” by KCPS members Shona Jaray, and “Front Row” by Peter Beddek. They performed admirably, and helped NZ make second place, just behind Canada.

Well done, Shona and Peter.

The second Tuesday of the month is rolling round, so it’s time for our regular meeting at the Presbyterian Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae.

The highlight will be a presentation by Bruce Girdwood. Bruce is well-known to us as one of our regular judges.  He will show some of his excellent images. Check out his site – this image is just one example of the quality of his work.

Report on Postprocessing Meeting 6 Sep 2011

06 Tuesday Sep 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, Useful Links

≈ Comments Off on Report on Postprocessing Meeting 6 Sep 2011

We had another successful session, with a lucky thirteen members along.  Much of the evening was spent discussing how best to create good images.

This can start with something that catches your eye, but then making a good image out of it means capturing and conveying what you found attractive about it to start with.  This should be photographed clearly, without distracting or cluttered backgrounds.

A good  image will be:

  • meaningful and tell some kind of story
  • well composed
  • good technically (e.g., without blown highlights or poor focus)

In terms of composition, we worked through and discussed an excellent set of 10 Top Photography Composition Rules – bearing in mind that rules are really only guidelines, and are sometimes there to be broken. The example shown from that site illustrates the well-known “rule of thirds”.

Another useful link discussed was an online calculator  for calculating depth of field and hyperfocal distances for many different cameras.

All in all it was a very informative session.  Thanks to Rod, Murray, Peter and Hugh who are doing an excellent job organising these sessions.

The next meeting on Tuesday 4 October will be a photoshoot session in downtown Waikanae (Mahara Place).  Stay tuned for more details, which will be available soon on the Events Calendar.
