Waikanae Estuary Project – Monday 14 October

10 Thursday Oct 2013

Posted by KCPS in Exhibitions, News, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Waikanae Estuary Project – Monday 14 October

Waikanae Estuary Project

At our next KCPS meeting – on Monday 14 October – we are fortunate to have two speakers to share their insights and knowledge on the Waikanae Scientific Reserve. With our club meeting rooms being located on the edge of the estuary, it has been an inspiration for many of the photographers in KCPS.

Mary McEwen, the daughter of Sir Charles Fleming (the founder of the Waikanae Scientific reserve) will speak first on the history of the estuary. This will be followed by Pat Menzies from Friends of the Waikanae Estuary, talking about current developments and conservation.

With this background knowledge, we hope members will be inspired to become involved in the KCPS Waikanae Estuary Project. This will result in images for an exhibition in the Paraparaumu Library Roderick & Gillian Deane Art Space Gallery, planned for 9 to 29 August 2014.

The objectives of the KCPS Waikanae Estuary Project are to:

  • Increase general public awareness of the Waikanae Scientific Reserve
  • Display members’ images
  • Promote KCPS to the community
  • Establish links with other community groups
  • Have group photographic activities for members

We are particularly interested in highlighting issues pertaining to the Estuary  – e.g., Pollution and Conservation.

Ideas for photographic guideline categories for the Exhibition are:

  • Landscape
  • Birds
  • Vegetation
  • Small creatures – insects, crustaceans, fish, etc.
  • People and activities
  • Conservation

We hope to see you all on Monday night.

Must See Exhibitions

14 Wednesday Aug 2013

There’s a number of nearby exhibitions on now that should be of interest.

JOSEPH MICHAEL – DARK CLOUD: WHITE LIGHT

This is an exhibition of timelapse photography at Pataka Museum in Porirua, on until 13 October.  Free. Highly recommended – I saw it on Tuesday.

There’s around a dozen separate sequences shown on large screens, with music individually composed, taken in stunning locations around NZ with a rolling 24 hours of changes of weather and sky and sun and shadows.  My favourite was the Lake Marion one, showing low cloud and mist sloshing up and around and side to side in a deep valley.  Two of the sequences are in full 3D with glasses provided.  And don’t miss the 10 minute “Behind the Scenes” video where Joseph Michael goes into detail about how he created these works of art.

If you want more background and motivation to go, check out the story online from Campbell Live.

World Press Photo 2013

There’s not long now to catch the annual World Press Photo Exhibition at 42 Willis Street in Wellington – until 25 August. $5. The imagery is always amazing, although (for me) can also be a bit gruesome.

Gregory Crewdson – In a Lonely Place

This is on at the City Gallery Wellington until 8 September. Crewdson creates elaborate scenarios either on location or sound stages, using sets, actors, and full production crews, all in search of a perfect ‘moment of grace’.  Ian Linning and Carol Molineux have both seen and recommend it.

Karyn Packing Natex

Karyn Packing Natex packages

Our Natex project is almost all over, although there’s a lot of tidying up of finances and reporting now.

Support from many KCPS members for Natex through its many phases has been fantastic. We had another long day yesterday at the Te Horo Hall to repack all the prints into 109 boxes and packages, for dispatch back to the entrants. Thanks to Hugh, Karyn, Jo, Gary, Alan, Peter Ellis, and Jenny for helping out on this phase, as well as all those who helped mount the exhibition last Wednesday and then dismount it on Sunday.

Monday Meeting

Ou regular meeting at 7:30 pm at OBC next Monday 13 May will cover what happened at the PSNZ Convention last week. For a bit of a preview, you can see my seven “running commentary” blog entries at blog.photography.org.nz. Don’t forget that entries for the Autumn Salon are also due – go to this link on our website. The judge for this Salon is Bruce Girdwood.

KCPS member Alison Viskovic has an exhibition of monochrome photographs at Lindale’s Future Framing Gallery this weekend.  This is part of the Kapiti Coast Arts Trail – the annual event which features artists in their studios, artisan hubs, and displays in galleries and cafes, spread from Otaki to Paekakariki.

Alison’s exhibition of monochrome photographs is titled “An Essay on Gardening”.  It features paired images reflecting subjective and objective impressions of living with a garden.  Unmounted copies are available for immediate purchase

Check it out.

Hutt Camera Club Annual Exhibition On From 3-14 October

02 Tuesday Oct 2012

≈ Comments Off on Hutt Camera Club Annual Exhibition On From 3-14 October

The Hutt Camera Club have opened their Annual Exhibition, where their talented members display some of their best works. Quite a number of the prints are available for sale.

The venue is Odlin Gallery, at the corner of Myrtle & Huia Streets in Lower Hutt.

A unique aspect of this year’s exhibition is that members have been given full freedom in how to present the images, so you will see a wide range of styles from the traditional matting to more modern printing on other surfaces.

The exhibition runs 10 am to 4 pm, through to Sunday 14 October, so check it out if you get the chance.

In association with the World Press Photo Exhibition 2012 in Wellington from now until 29 August, the Dominion Post has an exhibition called “Wide Angle: Celebrating a decade of The Dominion Post” that provides a retrospective on the occasion of the newspaper’s 10-year anniversary.

The Dominion Post also ran a competition for readers’ photos and announced the results on 23 July. Besides the winner, fifteen photographers had their images highly commended. One of those was KCPS member Johanna Goudsblom, with her image “Cormorant Fisherman, Li River, China”. Well done, Jo!

International Film Festival and World Press Photo in Wellington

25 Wednesday Jul 2012

≈ Comments Off on International Film Festival and World Press Photo in Wellington

The NZ International Film Festival is on in Wellington from 27 July to 12 August 2012.

Colin has alerted us to some photography oriented movies that may interest KCPS members – in particular:

Chasing Ice – “Science and art confront awesome nature in this stunning giant screen account of National Geographic photographer James Balog’s painstaking (and dangerous) Extreme Ice Survey project. Capturing time-lapse photographs of numerous glaciers over several years, Balog assembles all the evidence anyone should ever need of the radical worldwide impact of climate change. — BG”

as well as Bert Stern, Original Madman, ¡Vivan las Antipodas! and Journal de France.

And of course the annual World Press Photo Exhibition 2012 will also be on in Wellington, from 26 July to 29 August 2012 – always worth viewing.

Horowhenua Camera Club Exhibition – Shannon

≈ Comments Off on Horowhenua Camera Club Exhibition – Shannon

Sandy Carter, President of the Horowhenua Camera Club, at their Exhibition Opening

Congratulations to the Horowhenua Camera Club, who are holding their first exhibition after being in operation for just on sixteen months.

Shona and I went up for the exhibition opening this evening, in the Shannon Public Library. We enjoyed seeing the images and talking to the locals, including Sandy Carter.

Do drop in and have a look if you are visiting (I gather the shopping is great) or passing through Shannon – the exhibition is on for the next couple of months.
