Dramatic Wellington Weather

06 Saturday Oct 2012

Posted by KCPS in News

≈ Comments Off on Dramatic Wellington Weather

You can’t beat Wellington on a good day. Nor can you beat it on a dramatic weather day.

There’s been everything from sun to gale northerlies, and gale southerlies, and heavy showers. We’ve all managed to get out and about and capture some of the drama and the wildlife and the fantastic views from Matiu/Somes.

Here’s just one example of the view towards Wellington city as the southerly and showers arrived around 6 pm this evening.

A dozen KCPS members have arrived here safely, for an overnight stay and to take advantage of the many photo opportunities.

This is the beautiful view over Wellington Harbour as we plan the rest of the day.

A Year of Blogging

24 Friday Aug 2012

Posted by KCPS in News

Just to note that today is exactly one year since this blog and web site started up. Thanks all for your support and for following along.

A few statistics:

  • This is the 105th post on the blog
  • The site has had 10,650 page views in the first year
  • The busiest day was 31 May with 182 views
  • There are 53 people who “follow” the blog and get emailed for every post
  • The blog postings are also tweeted by @KCPhotoSoc which has nine twitter followers
  • We get visitors from all over the world, but of course the majority are from New Zealand

Below is a graph showing monthly page views for the site for the last year, and a map and list of the top countries (there’s another 36 countries with less than 5 page views) for the last six months.

Photography from Space – Mt Tongariro Ash Cloud

08 Wednesday Aug 2012

≈ Comments Off on Photography from Space – Mt Tongariro Ash Cloud

As photography enthusiasts  we concentrate on our efforts on ground-based photography, or sometimes from the air. Photographic imagery is also a valuable tool from space – to assist weather forecasting (of course), and also to monitor ash plumes from volcanoes.  The ash can be very dangerous for airline operations, but isn’t always easy to detect when there is lots of cloud around.

A new polar-orbiting satellite was recently launched (Suomi NPP) and NASA has just posted an image from it, showing the ash cloud from Mount Tongariro, around an hour after it erupted late Monday evening.  You can see the impressive  full image at the NASA site, but below I’ve cropped in to show the central North Island with the ash heading east towards Hawke’s Bay.  This image was from around 12:55 am NZ time – note the lights from major population centres as well.

Trenna Packer Nature Competition Results

28 Saturday Jul 2012

≈ Comments Off on Trenna Packer Nature Competition Results

This year, for the first time I am aware off, the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society entered the annual Trenna Packer Nature competition.

The results are now out, with the first three places being taken by the Nature Photographic Society, the Pukekohe Franklin Camera Club, and the Greymouth Photography Club. Check out their sets.

We were aware that our entry probably had too many birds, and needed to be more diverse. But I think it was a good effort for a first try, with some excellent images (see below).  Thanks to all who submitted images to be considered, and to Carol for helping with the selection. Onwards and upwards for another KCPS entry next year!

In association with the World Press Photo Exhibition 2012 in Wellington from now until 29 August, the Dominion Post has an exhibition called “Wide Angle: Celebrating a decade of The Dominion Post” that provides a retrospective on the occasion of the newspaper’s 10-year anniversary.

The Dominion Post also ran a competition for readers’ photos and announced the results on 23 July. Besides the winner, fifteen photographers had their images highly commended. One of those was KCPS member Johanna Goudsblom, with her image “Cormorant Fisherman, Li River, China”. Well done, Jo!

What A Great KCPS Open Day

15 Sunday Jul 2012

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, News

Wow. The weather may have been a bit miserable outside, but the atmosphere was warm and friendly inside.  People started arriving right on noon and kept coming. We had around fifty visitors during the afternoon, who all had the chance to meet some of our members, see and hear what we do, and get some advice on photography.

As a result, we already have five new members signed up, and I expect there will be more to come.  Welcome!

A big thank you to all those involved in organizing the event, and helping out on the day.  At the risk of missing someone out (sorry if I did – there were so many!) this includes Ian, Sandra, Karyn, Hugh, Debbie, Stu, Brian, Carol M, Carol S, Colin, Michelle, Rex, Scott, Marshall, Peter E, Peter B, Katie, Helen and Rod, as well as those others who submitted prints for the print display.

We’re also very grateful to Beach FM, the Kapiti News and Kapiti Observer for their part in promoting this successful, local community event. I think it would be well worth repeating, perhaps on an annual basis.
