The club exhibition opening night was a huge success, officially opened by Deputy Mayor Mike Cardiff and followed by amazing selection of drinks and nibbles provided by our members. Everyone enjoyed the array of images, the display of diversity and massive talent our club has to offer.

A special thank you to our president Alison for all the work she did in preparing the images to the highest standard and ensuring the exhibition flowed cohesively.

If you haven’t been yet? the exhibition is still on until the Friday 24th June.

≈ Comments Off on Hal Gimpelson – Upcoming Exhibited Work

KCPS member Hal Gimpelson will have a second solo show in the Art Space at the Paraparaumu Library from 23 August through 11 September.

It includes 15 abstract close-ups of rust and graffiti on railroad cars and prints of sunsets.  Some of these images have been seen at KCPS meetings but have been refined.  Some of the sunsets are now printed about 1.5 metres wide.  To whet your appetites, below are a couple of the images on show.

Emerging Light Gallery

For poetry readers, three of Hal‘s writings have also been selected by three artists to create new works.  It’s a fascinating show combining writer and visual art at an annual show entitled Con-Fluent at the Emerging Light Gallery in Plimmerton from now (it started on 14 August) to late September.

A metal piece by eco-jeweller JoAnna Mere is entitled Exhale/Poumoana with words from Hal’s Never Stopping, a felting work by Birgit Moffatt based on his Carving Aotearoa, and a third piece composed of layered and carved photos based on his We Can’t Photograph Every Cloud.

“Monochrome 2015” Exhibition 2—13 September 2015

04 Tuesday Aug 2015

Posted by KCPS in Exhibitions

≈ Comments Off on “Monochrome 2015” Exhibition 2—13 September 2015

Mike Martin from KCPS, and Fred Wotton who will be our judge for the Spring Salon, are just two of the excellent monochrome photographers who will be exhibiting in “Monochrome 2015”.  This runs from 2—13 September at the Odlin Gallery, 9-11 Myrtle Street, Lower Hutt.  Open from 10:00 am — 4:00 pm daily.

Further details are below.

B&W Group

 Monochrome 2015

The Monochrome Group, a group of highly
experienced amateur photographers, will
show their work in an unusual exhibition in
Lower Hutt this month.

Monochrome 2015 will be the group’s second
exhibition, the first of which, in January
2013, set attendance records for the Odlin
Gallery.

The group, whose members come from
throughout the Wellington region, was
formed some 15 years ago with the intent of
preserving traditional photography.
Devotees of the darkroom, the group
members continue to use film and
chemicals rather than digital cameras and
computers.

Nine members will each present images in
an exhibition at the Odlin Gallery, near the
Dowse Gallery, in Lower Hutt, from 2
September 2015.

One of the group, retired engineer Brian
Smith, uses a large Kodak 2-D view camera,
a model maufactured between 1921 and
1950. Its 8×10 inch negative is equivalent to
a 1.3 Gigabyte digital file and produces
images far more detailed than those from
the average digital camera. Contact prints
from these negatives show domestic and
other interiors.

Another member, Johnsonville resident
Fred Wotton, now in his 80s, has been a
member of the group for over 10 years. His
speciality is capturing panoramic scenes
with his 35mm Leica rangefinder camera,
which he has been using for the past 54
years.

Meetup and Development Group Reports

National Geographic 50 Greatest Photographs

Around 15 people from the KCPS Meetup Group got together to view this Exhibition at Expressions Gallery in Upper Hutt last Saturday morning. Most stayed for a tea or coffee and chat afterwards. The Exhibition is highly recommended – it was great to be able to see all the images as prints – particularly this very large tree photo by Michael Nicholls.

I was personally also very taken with this photo by Sam Abell.  It’s a brilliant example of composition, with many layers – maybe as many as nine. From the back there is the sky, the prairie, some cattle on the right, a single cowboy, two more cowboys grabbing another calf, the guy with the bucket for the Rocky Mountain Oysters, the cowboy with bloody scalpel in this mouth, the calf, and then the young guy on the left helping.

Whether or not you make it to the Exhibition (which closes on 26 July) I recommend getting this iPad app (NZ$6.49) which allows you to view all the images, read the back stories, watch some videos, and see other photos taken around the same time.

Thanks again to Rachel Stevens for all she does to organise such outings.

DEVELOPMENT GROUP – ADVANCED SESSION

There are around ten of us at the session last night, where amongst other things I discussed the Sam Abell image above.  I also talked about some of the key principles which are common for time-lapse photography and my “Painted Skies” images.  These are:

  • Set everything manual (ISO, White Balance, Aperture, Shutter, Focus)
  • Turn off image stabilisation
  • Use either RAW OR JPG depending …..
  • Solid tripod
  • Intervalometer
  • ND filter? (can be useful for motion blur)

FIXING HALOES

At the end of the evening I shared a very useful Photoshop technique I’ve recently worked out for getting rid of haloes in images. They can occur at sharp edges with large changes in brightness, such as where the land meets the sky.  I’m sure I’m not the first to do this, but I don’t think the technique is widely known.

What you do is open the image up in Photoshop, then create a new layer, and set its blending mode to darken.  Then, working on that layer, use the clone stamp tool with a small brush, and set the origin of the clone stamp (Alt-Click in Windows, or Option-Click on a Mac ) to some of the lighter area just near the halo edge.  Brush along the light halo and it will be replaced by darker sky from above and near it (the clone stamp origin will move along with the brush), while not affecting the land because that is already darker than the sky.  You can do this without using another layer, and just set the blending mode of the clone stamp brush to darken, but I prefer to have a separate layer.

Below is an example for a portion of an image of mine, where the halo has been fixed in the central part, while it is still clearly visible to the left and right.

2015 Programme

27 Tuesday Jan 2015

Posted by KCPS in Calendar, Exhibitions, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on 2015 Programme

Hi everyone.

A reminder that you can always found out the latest details of our upcoming programme and events at https://kcps.org.nz/events/

(c) Neil Gordon

The year is already off to a good start with several meetups. (Thanks to Rachel Stevens for organising these!)  I managed to get to the first one at Pukerua Bay (along with around twenty other photographers). There’s lots of photos posted – have a look.

The next meetup is on Sunday 8 February – “Welcome to Taylorville” – check out all the details here, and come along and join us.

The formal programme for KCPS will kick off on Monday 9 February at 7:30 pm, with a talk by Carol Molineux on ““Recent Journeys into the Arctic Regions of Svalbard and Iceland”.  She has some great images from a unique area that few get the opportunity to visit. Not to be missed.

Summer Salon – Set Themes

Entries for the first salon for the year are due on 9 March.  Please note that the Committee has decided to change the format this year, so that the first three salons will include set themes as well as open images. The updated rules for the 2015 competition can be downloaded here.

For the Summer Salon, you can enter one open digital image, and one on the theme of “Let’s Make Music“. For prints, you can enter one open print and one on the theme of “Intimate Moments“.  Make use of this gorgeous summer weather to get out and about to make images on these themes – which also correspond to two of the topics for the Wellington Interclub print battle later in the year. So we are hoping that this will result in a good selection of images to choose from for that.

Exhibition

Finally – there’s an exhibition of work by Yvonne Todd at the City Gallery in Wellington until 1 March that may be of interest. Check out http://www.citygallery.org.nz/exhibitions/yvonne-todd-creamy-psychology .

By all accounts the formal opening of the Exhibition was a great success on Monday, with more than 45 people there to see KCDC Mayor Ross Church do the honours.

Opening by the Mayor

Everyone was extremely impressed with the range and the quality of the work. The Mayor was very excited about the professionalism and range of the images – he even purchased one of Gavin Klee’s images.  Charles Fleming’s daughter Mary McEwen was also present, and purchased one of Peter Beddek’s prints. The food and wine kindly provided by KCPS members was fantastic.
