2014 Spring Salon & Development Group Meeting

28 Tuesday Oct 2014

≈ Comments Off on 2014 Spring Salon & Development Group Meeting

All 22 images which received either Honours or Highly Commended in the 2014 Spring Salon from judge Lance Lawson can be viewed online.  Click on GALLERY in the main menu, or directly here.  Thanks to Lance for his helpful judging last night, and for showing some of his recent commercial work.

It’s really pleasing to see how well new(ish) members in the Novice grade are doing.  Gill Mackersy picked up an Honours for her print “Imperfect Beauty”, and Brian Holden had two Highly Commended digital images, once of which (“Intruder”) is shown below.

Congratulations to both Gill Mackersy and Rhonda Billington who will be promoted to the Intermediate grade in 2015, after submitting portfolios.  (See the rules for the 2014 competition and promotion here.) The points have yet to be counted for promotion from Intermediate to Advanced. We’ll announce any changes at the end of year function.

Development Group Monday – “Lightroom Workflow”

The final Development Group for the year will be at 7:30 pm on 3 November. The topic will be “Lightroom Workflow”.  Bring along some images (preferably RAW) on a thumb drive, for Neil Gordon to demonstrate how they can be improved using the tools available in Lightroom.

Photosports

I understand that we came 4th in the 2014 Wellington Regional Interclub competition (also know this year as Photosports) on Friday night, out of the six Wellington Camera Clubs. We came first overall in the prints section, but didn’t fare so well in the digital.

Development Group Monday

The Development Group at 7:30 pm on 1 September will be a “Question and Answer” session. Bring along your questions about your camera, or anything to do with photography, and we will discuss and try to help.

Summer Salon Gallery

The 19 images which were rated Highly Commended or Honours by Tony Whincup when he judged our Summer Salon on 25 March are now available. I’m sorry it’s taken so long – things have been rather busy with Natex.

Either go to the GALLERIES menu on our home page where from a drop-down you can access all galleries, or you can get to them directly here.  Enjoy.

Deciding on Natex Prints Layout

Deciding on Natex Prints Layout

Thanks once again to all those who have been helping with various tasks for Natex.  One of the recent jobs was to look at all the accepted prints in the Te Horo Hall, and decide on the exhibition layout.

The Exhibition will be mounted in the West Gallery of the Wellington Town Hall next Wednesday.

If you weren’t able to register for the PSNZ convention, you can still see the Exhibition.  Best times for public viewing are on Friday and Saturday 3 and 4 May, from 9 am to 5 pm.  Do check it out if you can.

2012 Winter Salon Results

30 Thursday Aug 2012

Posted by KCPS in Gallery, Meeting Report

≈ Comments Off on 2012 Winter Salon Results

We sure had a bumper crop of entries!  26 members entered the Winter Salon, with all but four using the online system.

There were 40 digital entries – a record, as can be seen from the graph below showing entries since the start of 2010. It’s also very pleasing to see the number of entries from the Novice Grade this year.

KCPS Digital Entries since 2010

40 digital images plus 33 prints gave our hard-working judge Murry Cave 73 images to carefully consider. Many thanks Murry, for all the effort you put in.

There were around 30 members at the meeting last Monday night to see all the images and hear Murry’s comments on them – this took quite a long time, so unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to see any of Murry’s work – particularly his nature photography.  That will have to wait for another day ….

The gallery of most of the 17 images awarded either honours or highly commended is now available on our website (see GALLERIES in the top menu for all of them).

Of particular note is the appearance in this gallery for the first time by new members David Blyth (a Highly Commended for his first entered image), and Barry Culling (an Honours and two Highly Commended for his first Salon), as well as an Honours in Novice Print for Gavin Klee’s image – well done!

2012 Autumn Salon Results

30 Wednesday May 2012

“On the Ridge” – Highly Commended, Intermediate Digital Image – ©Carol Molineux

Many thanks to Tony Whincup for his judging of our Autumn Salon last Monday.  Around thirty members heard his insightful and constructive comments on our images.  He stressed the importance of how images should communicate.

Carol’s image “On the Ridge” was accidentally left out of the judging on the night, but was later reviewed by Tony and given a Highly Commended rating. It was pleasing to see many entries from our newer members, and to have them well received by the judge

The gallery of the 19 images that received either honours or highly commended is now available. (See also the GALLERIES menu item at the top of the page, to access all the salon galleries for 2010, 2011 and 2012, as well as earlier images).

Tony made the very good point in his own presentation that, since photography is about communication, then one of the best ways of making sure your communication is heard is to exhibit. He related his own experiences of exhibiting his “Playgrounds” series at the Ballarat International Foto Bienale in 2011, and how this triggered a series of further opportunities for his photographic art to be more widely appreciated.

All in all it was a very interesting and rewarding meeting, thoroughly enjoyed by those who were able to be there.
