Development Group Report & AV Production

07 Wednesday Mar 2012

Picture of people taking pictures of people taking pictures of ..

We had an excellent turnout of 15 people for the first meeting of the year.  Since it was such a lovely evening, we took photos out on the balcony and down by the river first, and then went inside for Murray’s informative presentation about the basics of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure adjustment.  A lively discussion followed, which moved into the subject of audiovisuals.

Next Session – Audiovisuals

The plan for the next session (Monday 2 April) is for a kind of “show and tell” on audiovisuals.  Those (who wish to) should prepare an AV of up to two minutes, with up to 30 images. Don’t forget the rule of thumb that each image should be displayed for no longer than around 4 seconds. Each AV will be shown, and then the author will explain how they did it.

For those on Windows who don’t already have some kind of Audiovisual programme, Windows Live Moviemaker from Microsoft looks quite good, and is a free download.  You need to be on either Windows Vista or Windows 7 for this, though.

If you are on Windows XP then something different called Windows Movie Maker should already be installed in your system if you have updated to Windows XP Service Pack 2, and is worth a try.

Feel free to add comments below if there is other software you prefer to use to make AVs – free or otherwise. As a Mac person I use and like Fotomagico, but there are many different packages available.

First Development Group Meeting Monday

04 Sunday Mar 2012

Posted by kcpsnewslettereditor1 in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on First Development Group Meeting Monday

Don’t forget that Monday night is the first meeting, for this year, of the Development Group.  Murray Woolcock has planned out the year’s programme to take people from the very basics of using your camera through to post-processing to make those WOW! images.

The Development Group meets at 7.30pm on the first Monday of the month from March to November in the same place as the regular KCPS meetings, i.e., the Otaihanga Boating Club.

For the first meeting Murray will present a brief powerpoint covering the basics of exposure control including shutter speed, aperture, ISO and exposure compensation.

Then we will go outside and try out these techniques with our own cameras.

We have it on good authority that the weather is going to be great, so come along!  This is a great opportunity to learn from some of the more experienced members!

Matting Matters & A Touch Early

27 Monday Feb 2012

Our next meeting is tonight at 7:30 pm at the Otaihanga Boating Club.  The main event will be a workshop on matting prints. Herman Visser will explain how he goes about it, and others including me will also demonstrate their techniques.

Photoshop Touch

At supper time if anyone wants to have a play with Adobe Photoshop Touch on an iPad 2, I downloaded and installed it yesterday. It appears that I managed to grab it in a narrow window of opportunity when Apple accidentally put it in the app store briefly, ahead of the planned release time on Monday US time.

≈ Comments Off on Entries for NATEX 2012 Due Soon

This is a reminder that entries are now being accepted for the 2012 PSNZ Canon National Exhibition.

(As announced at our meeting last Monday, next year KCPS will be running this exhibition, in association with the Wellington Photographic Society who are holding the PSNZ National Convention in Wellington in 2013.)

Entry forms are available on the PSNZ website  or by contacting the NATEX Committee (email Ross Forrester).

The closing date for entries is Tuesday 28th February 2012

Accepted entries will be exhibited at the 2012 PSNZ National Convention, 25th – 29th April at the Ascot Park Hotel, Invercargill. Entry is open to persons residing in New Zealand and to members of the Society residing overseas.

There is a discounted entry fee for individual PSNZ members (just as there is a discounted registration fee for PSNZ members attending the convention).  A PSNZ membership application form is available if you would like to join and be eligible for these discounts.

The most up-to-date information about upcoming activities will always be obtained from the Calendar of Events.

But since it can also be useful to have a one-pager with an overview of the year – here it is as a pdf file.

The first event is tonight – hope to see you there soon.

Monday, Monday – 13 February – First Meeting of 2012

09 Thursday Feb 2012

Just look at that view from the deck of The Boat Shed at the Otaihanga Boating Club. That’s what we’ll be enjoying with the first meeting of the year – 7:30 pm on Monday.

Yes – MONDAY – we’ve changed our regular meeting night to Monday, not Tuesday. Don’t be a day late! (And you’re likely to be very lonely if you go to our previous venue at the church hall in Waikanae by mistake.)

The main event will be a Members Exhibition with three of our members informally sharing some of their images and interest in photography. We look forward to seeing you there.

Don’t forget that subscriptions for this year are due now – Ian Linning will happily take your money at the meeting, or you can use Internet Banking. Details of the bank account are on the new member application form on our Membership Page.

Finally, when considering images, don’t forget the importance of content. This cartoon hilariously makes the point, from one of my favourite web comic sites – xkcd.com.

AGM Tuesday 8 November

Up Close with the Gannets (c)Stuart Ayres

Our AGM will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday 8 November in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae.

Now I know what you’re thinking: “I might get arm-twisted into joining the committee if I turn up.” Relax – we have sufficient nominations already. So you can come along and enjoy the formalities, including consideration of my President’s Report (now available under RESOURCES).

The AGM will be followed by a presentation showing many of the lovely images that were taken by those who went on the field trip to the Gannets in October.

And don’t forget to bring along your entries for the “best of year” competition.  You can submit one each of a colour print, monochrome print, and digital image – these must have been accepted in one of our four Salons this year. The winners will be announced by judge Simon Woolf who is MC at our end of year function on 22 November – tickets are $25 each and available for sale from any committee member. Partners welcome too.

Sausage Sizzle and other Upcoming Events

Sausage Sizzle 30 October

Don’t forget the Sausage Sizzle at 3 pm on Sunday – come check out our planned new venue from next year.

AWARDS FUNCTION 22 November

Starting at the Sausage Sizzle, we’ll be selling tickets for our gala End of Year function, which will be held at the same venue, at 7 pm on Tuesday 22 November. $25 per ticket.

WORKSHOP 1 November

The next post-processing workshop is this Tuesday 1 November, at 6 Matipo Street, Waikanae. It’s the  follow up to the 4 October Mahara Place photographic exercise. Select an image from that photo-shoot that you would like to enhance, put it on a memory stick or CD, and bring it to this meeting.

Also would members who are conversant with enhancing programmes on their laptops please bring these to this meeting to show and help by demonstrating the secrets and mysteries of post-processing software techniques to other members.

Neil Gordon will be demonstrating Lightroom. Marshall Marsden will be demonstrating Serif Photo Plus, (a free downloaded programme.) Mike Brewer will be using Picasa (another freebie).

We can answer questions that arise from the discussion.

PS. It is helpful if members could wear shoes that they can slip off when they enter the “borrowed” house at 6 Matipo Street. This saves using a vacuum cleaner to clean up on Wednesday.

Spring Salon Judging – Tuesday 25 October

24 Monday Oct 2011

≈ Comments Off on Spring Salon Judging – Tuesday 25 October

Tracey Robinson

The main event for our regular 4th Tuesday meeting will be the judging of the spring salon. Tracey Robinson from Rotorua kindly stepped in at the last minute when the pre-arranged judge unexpectedly had an assignment in Australia. Tracey will not be able to be here in person, so we will read through her emailed ratings and comments.

The meeting will be at 7:30 pm Tuesday 25 October in the Presbyterian Church Hall, 43 Ngaio Road, Waikanae. See you there.

While I have your attention – don’t forget our upcoming Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 30 October. And time is running out to enter the Jack Sprosen AV competition – entries must be in by 4 November.
