2013 Spring Salon Results

Our judge for the KCPS 2013 Winter Salon last night was Lance Lawson. Attendance was a bit down (probably because it was Labour Day after all).

However, those who were present enjoyed Lance’s discussion of the images (very much a two-way discussion), as well as an insight into the commercial photography world when he talked about three of his recent assignments.

All 17 Highly Commended and Honours images can be seen in the 2013 Spring Salon Gallery which is now online.  The three honours images are shown below.

BEST OF YEAR COMPETITION

Don’t forget that entries are due by 11 November for the Best of Year Competition, which will be judged by Simon Woolf at our End of Year dinner on Monday 25 November.  There are no grades – each member can submit one print and one digital entry, based on entries which were made to the four salons this year.  You can go direct to http://jotform.co/KCPS/bestofyear to find out more, and to submit your entry online. Bring your print entry along to the AGM on 11 November.

Central Region Success for KCPS, and Waikanae Estuary

18 Friday Oct 2013

I’m pleased to advise that KCPS won the “Wanganui Cup” for the best set of eight projected images in the interclub competition, as part of the PSNZ Central Region Salon this year, run by the Stratford Camera Club.

The KCPS images were from Gavin Klee, Paul Kane, Shona Jaray APSNZ, Neil Gordon LPSNZ, Alison Viskovic APSNZ, Ian Linning, Carol Molineux and Hugh Scott. “Hillside on a Summer’s Evening” by Neil Gordon also won the Heney Cup for the best projected image from all the club sets. The KCPS set, together the sets from the 2nd to 4th placing clubs, will go forward for consideration for the national Wiltshire Cup next year.

Congratulations to Carol Molineux, whose print “Essence of the Estuary” was the Champion Individual Print, winning the Stan and Doreen Long Cup. Carol also placed second in the Individual Projected Image section with her image “Spoonbill Catching Flounder”.

Waikanae Estuary Meeting Followup

Carol Molineux reports …..

There was a good turnout of members at last Monday’s KCPS meeting to hear Mary McEwan and Par Menzies give very informative talks on the history of the Waikanae  Estuary Scientific Reserve and current conservation projects.

Hopefully this has inspired everyone to take images of the estuary for the KCPS  exhibition in August 2014.

The months of October and November offer many opportunities for photographers. There are numerous nesting birds – the shags are particularly active and it is full swing for the white baiting season. We are wanting photos that shows the diversity of the estuary and seen through the eyes of many members not just a few.

We plan to set up a site for members to submit photos regularly so we can make a selection of approx. 50 photos in May next year. We also plan to have some field trips shortly to take photos and orientate those less familiar with the area.

2013 Winter Salon Judging

≈ Comments Off on 2013 Winter Salon Judging

Our judge for the KCPS 2013 Winter Salon was Glen Howey – splendid as always in his trademark orange tee shirt. Glen did another great job on judging last Monday. He also  showed an AV of a recent photo tour to Cambodia. He’s running another one – 25 days for a very reasonable cost – starting just after Christmas. Email him at glen@glenhowey.co.nz if you are interested.

All twenty Highly Commended and Honours images can be seen in the 2013 Winter Salon Gallery which is now online.

Congratulations to those who did well in this Salon – particularly those in the Novice section who came away with a slew of Honours and HCs, including five of the six images awarded Honours, as shown below.

Report on Smartphone Photography Talk

14 Wednesday Aug 2013

Judging from the very kind feedback that I’ve received, my talk on Monday night went well. 🙂

I covered the evolution of cameras on phones since 2000 (based on this website plus the history of iPhones), some of their unique aspects as compared with “regular” cameras, some examples of good quality imagery, and then I did a live demonstration of a number of applications on my iPhone 4S.

One of the early phones that we all found amusing was this Samsung SCH-V770…. a 7MP camera phone with 3x optical zoom and autofocus. This has interchangeable lenses, but I’d not sure I’d want to put it up to my ear in case of causing damage!

Then, just a day after the talk, rumours started flying of a new Sony attachable “camera lens” (that would connect via Bluetooth) and use an iPhone or other phone as its display and control.

Watch this space – innovation continues!

For those technically inclined, the live demonstration of software on my iPhone 4S was done by creating a Wifi network from my MacBook Pro, connecting to it from the iPhone, then running an app on the MacBook Pro called Reflector. I used Airplay from the iPhone to mirror its live screen display onto the MacBook Pro, and project it up onto the screen.  Worked a treat.

Wellington Interclub Print Battle 2013 at KCPS

≈ Comments Off on Wellington Interclub Print Battle 2013 at KCPS

KCPS had the pleasure of hosting the annual Wellington Interclub Print Battle at KCPS last evening. The Otaihanga Boating Club was full to the brim to see Tony Bridge do an excellent job of judging one print from each of the six clubs, for each of ten categories.

A full house watches Tony Bridge judging prints in the "Movement" category.

Congratulations to Karori Camera Club, who were the clear winners on the night, against tough competition. The final score sheet is shown below. A score of 1 for an image means it was the top rated, 2 for the second rated, etc. So the lowest total wins – Karori Camera Club getting 23. We were very happy to come second, thanks to a sprint finish with the top rating for the KCPS “Terraced” image. WPS seemed to get stuck on 4!

Tony also chose the best abstract print of the night, in honour of the late Stella Daniell. The print was by Ian Walker from the Hutt Camera Club. Trophy and Award presentations are shown below.

Many thanks to Tony Bridge for doing a terrific job under demanding (by some) circumstances. We had a great turnout, and it was a fun night for all, capped off by socialising over a yummy supper provided by our members.

News from the Darkroom – July 2013

31 Wednesday Jul 2013

≈ Comments Off on News from the Darkroom – July 2013

News from the Darkroom

Here’s the latest newsletter by Michael Martin, from the Monochrome Film Users Group.

This group caters for those interested in capturing images on black and white film of different formats and darkroom techniques for processing and printing.

Meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of the month.

The next meeting is on Thursday 15th August at the home of Bill Harris, at 12 Kohekohe Road, Waikanae at 1930.

Meeting Reviews

July’s meeting was the sixth for this year and topics covered included; developing FP4 plus film in Adonal; the pros and cons of using a quick developer; further thoughts on print development; accurate measuring in the darkroom; and critiquing prints and negatives.

Group Presentation

Tuesday July 16th saw five of our group give a presentation to the Kapiti Camera Club. This involved showing the various film format cameras we use with a commentary and show of some of our work. Feedback from Kapiti Camera Club has been very positive with members been impressed with the different film formats and cameras presented and the quality of the images shown. Our group enjoyed the hospitality of KCC and the opportunity to share what we do.

Thank you to all involved.

Group Outing

This coming weekend will see seven of us on a photographic trip to Castlepoint from Friday to Sunday. The weather forecast promises to be challenging so watch this space in our next newsletter.

New Products

SPUR have announced another new developer, Acurol-N, which they believe when used with Rollei Ortho 25 film (which is a rebadged MACO made film), will redefine sharpness. Read about it at The Online Darkroom at http://www.theonlinedarkroom.com/2013/06/spur-more-exciting-developments.html

It is great to see a company like SPUR pushing the boundaries with new products.

Not a new product but an opinion on trying out different films while still available. The article titled “12 Films Worth Shooting With Before They’re Gone” can be found on   http://www.popphoto.com/gear/2013/07/12-films-worth-shooting-theyre-gone written by Stan Horaczek.

While we are onto web sites one our members, Des Johnston has a blog with some of his photos and other items. Check out http://desmondjohnston.wordpress.com

This Month’s Images

This month’s images were captured on my Nikon 35Ti on 35mm Kodak 400 TX film developed in Agfa Rodinal Special and show members of our intrepid group showing off at the Kapiti Camera Club.

hinchcliffCongratulations to Gavin Klee for his well-deserved win of the Frank Hinchliff Trophy, for his image “Ratana Church”. Here he is receiving the trophy from judge John Boyd.

Gavin also took third place in the competition!

The top three images are shown below.

Thanks to all who entered, and to John for his very insightful comments on the prints, as well as for showing us his own work, and some fascinating historical images from the PSNZ Permanent Collection.

Competition Selections

Wellington Interclub Print Battle

We had another good attendance of some 40 people for the Competition Selection last Monday.  A very democratic, and fun, process was used to selected which print would go forward from KCPS for each of the ten categories for the Wellington Interclub Print Battle that we’ll be hosting on Monday 5 August.  There’s a good spread of representation too, with those ten images coming from seven of our members.

Just some of the group, circling and inspecting the prints, pink sticky in hand ready to cast a vote

Chance and Bowron

We really only started the process of selecting images to compile KCPS sets of four images each for the Chance print and Bowron digital interclub landscape competitions.  The plan is to base each set around images which include Kapiti Island oen way or another.

Please email digital versions of images you’d like considered, by 10 July, to me at neil.d.gordon@gmail.com.

Trenna Packer

A group convened by Carol Molineux selected the set of six digital images we have now submitted to the Trenna Packer Nature Competition. I think it’s a good set –  let’s hope the judges do too!

Autumn Salon Judging

30 Thursday May 2013

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, Salon Results

≈ Comments Off on Autumn Salon Judging

We had more than forty people last Monday night to see the Ohakune Field Trip AV, and then hear from Bruce Girdwood, the Autumn Salon judge.

Bruce has been judging for KCPS for many years, and it’s always a privilege to hear his comments on our images, as well as to see where he is going himself on his photographic journey. His judging was thorough, constructive and helpful. Fifteen images received either Honours or Highly Commended. It was especially pleasing that two of our newer members received their first honours: Chris McGinty (in his first salon entry) for his digital image “Bloom”, and Gill Mackersy for her print “Wheels for Hire”.

All fifteen Highly Commended and Honours images can be seen in the 2013 Autumn Salon Gallery which is now online.

Low Light Photography – and Nick Ward

04 Monday Mar 2013

≈ Comments Off on Low Light Photography – and Nick Ward

The first Development Group meeting for the year will be on at 7:30 pm tonight at OBC.

The topic is Low Light Photography, and it will be led by Ian Linning.

This will be a practical session – so bring your camera, etc. The idea will be be to match up newer members with more experienced ones so they can work together and try various techniques for dealing with low light.

Don’t stay in the dark about this topic – come along and learn and have fun!

Nick Ward Report

Nick Ward photo
Some 40 KCPS members were spellbound last week for the talk by Nick Ward.

He showed a couple of opening sequences from movies such as Hitchock’s “Rear Window” to illustrate how much could be conveyed about the characters and the story simply from imagery, without dialogue.  The lessons for our own photography were obvious, and his presentation was well received.
