Critique Session Monday – “Something Small”

06 Thursday Sep 2012

“Haka Kid” – something small? – (c) Neil Gordon

At our KCPS meeting next Monday we will have a critique of your submitted images on the subject of  “Something Small”. This is a great opportunity for those members who have not submitted any images for judging in our Salons, but would welcome feedback on their work by their peers in a non threatening environment.

Also for members who are regular contributors to our Salons it’s the opportunity to stretch your imagination, within the bounds of the Topic.

If you are going to bring along prints they don’t need to be matted, but need to be large enough to be seen by the audience, so a minimum of 20cm x 15cm.

If you are going to bring along digital images, it would be helpful if you could email them  to Ian by Sunday midday (i.linning@xtra.co.nz) and bring along your USB drive on the night.

Come along and enjoy an entertaining and educational evening on Monday at 7:30 pm.

Development Group Monday – Portraits Continued

31 Friday Aug 2012

≈ Comments Off on Development Group Monday – Portraits Continued

The Development Group on Monday 3 September will carry on with the theme of portraits from the previous meeting.

If possible, please do your “homework” of an environmental portrait. In any event, bring along some images – a portrait or three – on Monday for some demonstrations and experimenting with post-processing. Should be another fun learning experience for all.

Members’ Exhibition Tomorrow – 13 August

12 Sunday Aug 2012

≈ Comments Off on Members’ Exhibition Tomorrow – 13 August

The KCPS meeting at 7:30 pm on Monday evening will be a members’ exhibition.  This a regular feature during the year – an opportunity to hear from them how they got interested in photography, what images they like to make, and to see some representative images they have brought along.

The three members we will be hearing from tomorrow are Stuart Ayres, Gavin Klee and Des Johnston.  Below is an image from each that I’ve picked as an appetiser for what they will be showing us. Stuart’s is from this year’s Summer Salon, Gavin’s from our KCPS club entry for the Trenna Packer Salon this year, and Des’s from his blog at http://desmondjohnston.wordpress.com.

Come along, and see and hear lots more …

And don’t forget to get your entries in for the Winter Salon – also due tomorrow.

Report on Portrait Workshop

07 Tuesday Aug 2012

Some of the attendees trying out and discussing various lighting gear for portraits

Around 14 of us had a great workshop last evening. Unfortunately Colin wasn’t well enough to be there, but the workshop was well led by Ian and Hugh, assisted by notes from Colin. It was very hands-on, as the photo shows – with lots of trials of lighting techniques and use of fancy gear such as wireless flash triggering.

A homework “Challenge” was set for those who were there – and others are of course welcome to join in:   Make an Environmental Portrait where the photographer is in control of posing the subject, and telling a story about the person.  This could be someone proud of their garden gnome, someone reading a story to a child, etc. If you can, do this with someone you don’t already know – ask if you can take their photo for a KCPS project.

WINTER SALON ENTRIES DUE

These are due by next Monday 13 August.  Please use the online entry system, and bring along any prints to the meeting that evening, together with a printout of your online entry form from the response email.

Workshop on Portrait Photography

05 Sunday Aug 2012

Posted by KCPS in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Workshop on Portrait Photography

Monday evening’s Development Group meeting will be a Workshop on Portrait Photography.

Participants are invited to bring cameras & tripods, and also flash units or other lighting sources. Please also bring props, such as hats and scarves, and questions and tips to share.

Learn about lighting like this.

Ian Linning will have studio flashes arranged in one corner and Hugh Scott is organising a fixed lighting set up in a separate area. It will be an excellent opportunity to practice your posing techniques and capture images using different light sources.

At the end of the workshop there will be a small photographic challenge for you, and at September’s Development Group meeting there will be a session on post production of your portrait images.

We look forward to seeing you at the Otaihanga Boating Club 7.30pm Monday 6 August for a “hands on” imaginative learning experience.

Simon Woolf Lighting Presentation 9 July

07 Saturday Jul 2012

Simon Woolf in typically dynamic form

We have another treat in store at our regular KCPS meeting on Monday 9 July, with Simon Woolf giving a presentation on lighting.  He’s an excellent photographer and teacher, so this will be well worthwhile attending.

Entries are also due that night for the Frank Hinchcliff Trophy.  You can submit one or two prints, of images captured within the last two years.

At the start of the session we’ll also have a brief presentation of images from the Waikanae Estuary Photoshoot from two weeks ago. Those who took part are welcome to each bring along no more than six images that they want to share, on a thumb drive.

RECENT MEETINGS

The Development Group meeting last Monday went very well. Carol reported:

There were 11 people who attended. Peter Ellis gave a power point presentation of the history of photography and the different processes over the years. These included the Dagurerrotype, Ambrotype and Tintype processes. He illustrated these with personal family photos showing the original and the restored photo he had done. He then restored a scanned damaged photo using layers in photo shop and some of the processes used included cloning ,blurring and increasing the contrast. Hugh Scott then showed his work set up which involved photographing the original photo in RAW using a macro lens. It was a very informative evening.

Six KCPS members went up to the Horowhenua Print Battle in Foxton last Wednesday 4 July. There were around twenty people in total who were split randomly into four teams. We had a really fun evening with lots of banter, and spot quizzes as well as print competitions.  Thanks to Sandy Carter and the rest of the Horowhenua Camera Club for putting on a thoroughly enjoyable night.

Monday 2 July – Development Group

On Monday 2 July 7:30 pm the Development Group will meet, with the topic of restoring old photos.  Peter Ellis and Hugh Scott will be explaining some of the techniques.  Peter will have a scanner and laptop available, so feel free to bring along an old photo or two to see what can be done with it.  Below is an example of an image “before” and “after” (a work still in progress, says Peter)  to show the flavour of what can be done.

Wednesday 4 July – Foxton Print Battle

This will be a fun night, hosted by the Horowhenua Camera Club. It starts at 7 pm at the Salvation Army Hall, Avenue Road, Foxton.  We’ll be carpooling up – please meet at 6 pm at the small car park on the western side of Marae Lane, Waikanae.

The rules for the print battle are simple:

  • Each person to bring 4 printed images for the competition (choose a variety of subjects!)
  • People are placed randomly into teams, with up to 5 teams for the evening
  • 10-12 categories will be read out during the night
  • Each team chooses the image that best suits that category
  • Images will be awarded points from 1-5, with 5 being the best match for the category
  • Teams may accompany the image with an explanation/story as to why that image was chosen
  • Images can only be used once throughout the evening
  • Random points will be awarded throughout the evening for quiz questions, and at the judges’ discretion. Judges can be swayed with bribery.

Supper will be provided.
Please remember to bring your prints and your sense of humour.
