Our regular meeting on Monday 25 June is a selection night for three competitions:

Wellington Interclub Print Battle

This will be held on 23 August. We need to choose one print for each of the following ten themes.  Please bring along prints for consideration. They need not be matted at this stage, but need to be large enough so they can be considered (i.e., don’t bring along small 10 cm by 15 cm prints).

4. Animals
5. Time
6. Arrivals
7. Three
8. hands
9. Red, green, blue
10. Abstract

George Chance Landscape Print Interclub Competition

We need a set of four landscape prints – all from different KCPS members. Please bring along prints to be considered. The prints need not be matted yet.

These need to be a very coherent “set”, not just four unrelated images, so we may not be able to make a final choice on the night, but can all see what we have to work with. The judges commented last year that what they look for are:

• Presentation
• Matching tonal range
• Colour consistency through set
• Unison of size and shape of cropped images
• Consistent borders
• Sensitivity

Bowron Landscape Projected Images Interclub Competition

We need a set of four landscape digital images – again, all from different KCPS members. Please bring along (on a thumb drive) images to be considered.  Use the usual digital image size for our KCPS competitions (up to 1600 by 1200) for now. These also need to be a “set”, not just four unrelated images, so we may not be able to choose on the night.

Shona

Brave the weather and come along this evening to hear all about the convention that took place a few weeks ago in Invercargill.  Candid photos of some of the goings on are available online, including our new PSNZ President, Shona, weighed down by the burdens of office.

As we’ll hear, there’s lots to learn and do at these conventions – start thinking now about attending next year’s one – Positively Photography Wellington.

Development Group 2 April

For this next meeting at 7:30 pm, the plan is for a kind of “show and tell” on audiovisuals (AVs).  Those (who wish to) should prepare an AV of up to two minutes, with up to 30 images. Don’t forget the rule of thumb that each image should be displayed for no longer than around 4 seconds. Each AV will be shown, and then the author will explain how they did it. Check the post about the first Development Group meeting for further information.

Critique Session 9 April

Yes, we know this is Easter Monday and some people will be away. For those who aren’t, come on down to the Otaihanga Boating Club for a critique session on the first five themes for the annual Wellington Interclub Print Battle. That event is still many months away (23 August) so we won’t be selecting prints to use, just using these as themes for our own critique session.  They are:

• Panning
• Music
• Urban
• Animals
• Time

For those who haven’t been to a critique session before – members can each bring along a half dozen or so large or matted prints (no 6 by 4 inch prints please) and digital images (on a thumb drive).  These are shown for everyone to have a look at, and comment, and discuss, and provide suggestions for improvement. It’s a sort of facilitated joint judging session where everyone gets to share and learn, and more informal than our regular judged salons.

So do spend the next week or so, and the Easter break,  having a look through your images for ones which would fit those five themes, and bring some along to share and learn.

This should be an excellent session.  With our new online salon entry form and enthusiastic new members, we had a bumper crop of entries.

Bruce Girdwood will be judging.  He’s a great photographer and a very experienced and PSNZ-certified judge.  He convened the recent panel which selected the Open Projected Images for NATEX.

Bruce will be providing constructive comments and ratings on 24 print entries and a record 29 digital images. 12 of the digital entries are from novice grade, which is great to see.  Actually, they will all be great to see. Don’t miss it.

We have a real treat in store for our meeting at 7:30 pm on Monday 12 March. Our guest speaker will be NZ Herald Photographer, Mark Mitchell. Mark won the “Photography – Senior Best Portfolio of Six Pictures” category in the 2011 Canon Media Awards. His portfolio of six images can be seen at the NZ Herald site, with other details and photos at infonews.co.nz .

In his presentation, Mark will share some of what it’s like in his profession these days, including the increasing role of video as well as stills.
