What’s coming up this year?

We hope you are all seeking out images of Kapiti for the mid-year exhibition at the Paraparaumu Library. The theme is “Kapiti – Our Place” so that covers anything from land- and sea-scapes to people and activities that are typical of Kapiti. Some good opportunities coming up include the Kapiti Heritage Weekend, Sat 23 and Sun 24 January. All the museums from Otaki to Paekakariki will be open and many will have special displays and activities. Then the Waikanae Garden Trail is on Sat 30 and Sun 31 January.
Our main programme starts on Monday 8 February, when the main speaker will be Gavin Klee on his nature photography.  This year’s club brochure will be available that evening.

Monday 22 February

We are having an open evening – visitors invited, and there will be a sausage sizzle. Members are each asked to bring a plate of finger food, and a print to display on our brand-new easels.

Monday 7 March

Is the first Development Session, focussing on use of camera controls – bring your camera, and be prepared to try things afterwards out in a small project we’ll set you!

Monday 14 March

Will be a Member Exhibition night, with three members showing images and talking about their photography. Closing date for Summer Salon entries.

Monday 28 March

Will be Summer Salon (just open, no set subjects this year!)

Looking forward to seeing you around with your cameras, as well as at our meetings.
Cheers from Alison and the Committee

AGM for 2015

10 Tuesday Nov 2015

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on AGM for 2015

Last night’s AGM was all over in 13 minutes – a record time.  That doesn’t mean that important decisions weren’t made. The following is based on a summary kindly provided by Alison Viskovic, who was re-elected President.

Reports had been pre-circulated, and no major issues arose. The subscriptions for the coming year will remain unchanged.

A highlight was the unanimous vote that Hugh Scott be appointed a Life Member, recognising his many years of service on and off the committee, and the enthusiasm and stimulation he always brings to the club.

Neil Gordon has retired from the committee after a number of years as committee member, president, past president and guardian of the blog and website functions.  The meeting thanked him for all his contributions to the club.

The committee for the coming year is:

  • President – Alison Viskovic
  • Treasurer – Jo Goudsblom
  • Membership Secretary – Carol Molineux (Jo and Carol are also sharing vice-president duties)
  • Immediate Past President – Ian Linning
  • Committee members – Karyn Crocker, Gavin Klee, Rachel Stevens, Craig Burleigh, Roger Smith.

Following the AGM we had some good discussions about themes for next year’s Kapiti project.  We also viewed the print set which came second in the Bledisloe competition, as well as club and successful individual entries for the Central Regional Convention, on in New Plymouth this coming weekend.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our end-of-year dinner, Monday 23 November. We need to confirm numbers next week, so please do your online payment soon if you have not done so already.

Yes, we know it’s Labour Weekend and you are probably out and about, or even away.

Each member can enter one digital image and one print. There are no “grades” for this end of year competition.

Each image entered must have been entered into one of the four Salons held during the year, or be fundamentally based on it (for example, small improvements in line with judge’s comments at the original competition are acceptable).

Tickets Available for EOY Function

The Best of Year entries will be judged by John Boyd at our gala end of year function on Monday 23 November starting at 6:30 pm, at the Otaihanga Boating Club.  Details have been emailed to all members.  Please pay online if possible, or by cash to Treasurer Jo Goudsblom at a meeting.  Jo will have tickets available at all meetings, starting with the meeting on Labour Day Monday.

KCPS Speaker – Stephen Rowe

09 Friday Oct 2015

Posted by KCPS in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on KCPS Speaker – Stephen Rowe

The main speaker for the KCPS Meeting on 12 October will be Stephen Rowe (BA, DipPhot, MFA), from the Photo School in Raumati.

Stephen has a wide range of experience as an editorial and portrait photographer for magazine stories and book covers, and has also worked as a photography technician/tutor at Massey University.

His exhibition, “The New Rugby” (a documentary photography project that looked at the changes in rugby since it became a professional sport and how those changes mirrored the societal changes in New Zealand since the 1980s economic reforms) started at The Dowse, Lower Hutt, 2003, then toured nationally. Images from the project are held in the Alexander Turnbull Library.

For his MFA final exhibition (ATM, 2008) Stephen produced near life size images of Automated Teller Machines. Devoid of the usual text, these images called into question the ubiquity of branding and the homogeneity of a global consumer culture where words become replaced with symbols.

02 Sunday Aug 2015

≈ Comments Off on Window Lit Portrait Advice – Winter Salon Entries Due Soon

Still working on that image for the set print them of “Window Lit Portrait” for the Winter Salon?

Here’s some useful advice you might like to review for that theme.

And don’t forget that the set digital theme is “Industrial Disease”.

Entries for the Winter Salon are due by Monday 10 August. Please – online entries must be in by 5 pm so that I have time to collate them all for the judge.

Monday 3 August Development Session

This Monday’s session is more for Advanced workers but all members are welcome to attend.

The topic is macro photography and lighting for macro – please bring your camera and lenses, and some (small!) subject matter to photograph.

Monday 10 August Print Selection

The main meeting on 10 August will be to select prints for the Wellington Interclub Print Battle, due to be held on Tuesday 8 September in Petone.

Bring along lots of prints, which at this stage may be any size, mounted or unmounted – if a small one is selected then there is time to get it enlarged and mounted etc.

KCPS needs to have one final image for each of the following subjects:

Intimate Moments
Let’s Make Music
Backlit
10 Square Yards
Window-lit Portrait
Industrial Disease
Inspiring Views
Stormy Weather
Architecture
Glassware

I’ve been away a bit lately – hence the lack of posts (apologies).  I was sorry to miss the judging of the Frank Hinchcliff Competition by Bruce Girdwood on 13 July.

Congratulations to Carol Molineux who was this year’s winner of the prestigious trophy, with her print “Facing the Storm”.

Runner up was Barry Culling, with “Fast and Low”.

Here’s Carol receiving her trophy from Bruce (thanks to Gavin Klee for the photo):

Presentation FH to Carol

This year, we asked Bruce to award “Honours” or “Highly Commended” ratings to the images he liked best.  A full gallery of those images is available under the GALLERIES section of the KCPS website here.

Meeting 27 July – PSNZ Honours

Shona Jaray will be the speaker on Monday night’s meeting at 7:30 pm.  She’ll talk about going for PSNZ Honours. In particular, she will show examples of unsuccessful and successful sets.  This should be a very worthwhile session for those who are considering going for honours next year.
