We’re in for a treat at the next KCPS meeting (7:30 pm Monday 25 February March at OBC) with a talk by Nick Ward about “Creating a Story in Your Images”.Nick Ward

Nick Ward broke into feature screenwriting with pool comedy Stickmen. An instant Kiwi hit, Stickmen won Ward a 2001 NZ Film Award for best script.

He went on to originate and co-write the hit romance Second-Hand Wedding, and reconvened with Wedding director Paul Murphy for 2011 follow-up Love Birds. Ward has also penned episodes of TV series Outrageous Fortune and Burying Brian, and horror flick The Ferryman.

Should be great!

Hi everyone – the programme for 2013 is about to get underway. You can check out the calendar for the year here or by going to the EVENTS menu item at the top of the KCPS web site.

Our first meeting for the year will be at 7:30 pm on Monday 11 February at the usual venue, the Otaihanga Boating Club. The featured speaker will be our vice President, Alison Viskovic APSNZ, who will give a presentation entitled “A Photographic Autobiography”.

Alison did very well in the recent Dunedin Festival of Photography, receiving honours for her image shown here – “Illusion No 5”. It will be good to see more of her work.

We’ll also be seeking people to help out with the PSNZ National Exhibition of Photography (NATEX) which KCPS is running this year.  Don’t forget to get your own entries in (that’s fine) – see details at kcps.org.nz/natex2013.

If you were considering going for PSNZ Honours, now is the time as well.  See details about Honours on the PSNZ blog.

Finally, the PSNZ National Convention this year is as close as it can get – down in Wellington. There’s lots of information at http://positivelyphotography.org.nz – check it out and consider registering for what is always a fantastic experience. Early bird pricing is available until the end of February.

The B+W Darkroom Group, run by Michael Martin and with members from KCPS and farther afield, is holding an Exhibition “Monochrome X10” at the Odlin Gallery (9-11 Myrtle Street, Lower Hutt) from 16 to 27 January.  Check it out.

What is DxOMark, and why should you care?DxOMark

DxO Labs make software called DxO Optics Pro, which does a very good job of post-processing images, based on a very large database that they have developed from analysing the performance of camera sensors and lenses.

That database turns out to be useful in its own right. Amongst other things, it lets them give a score for how good a camera sensor is. Although that’s only one part of what contributes to “Image Quality” (IQ) for a camera system, it’s an important part.

So it’s worth checking out the DxOMark Camera Sensor ratings if you you are interested in a new camera body, or one of the new mirrorless “compact system cameras” that are increasingly popular. It’s very interesting, also, to see how some of the major makes such as Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm compare. (Spoiler alert – Canon needs to pick up its game.)

It’s time to start planning to attend the 61st PSNZ Convention, which will be held in Wellington from 1-5 May 2013. WPS (Wellington Photographic Society) is organising it on behalf of PSNZ.

Registration is now open.Full details are available at http://positivelyphotography.org.nz.

Anybody who has ever attended a PSNZ National convention will tell you that it’s a fantastic time to learn more about photography, renew acquaintances and catch up with old, or not so old, friends.

You’ll be able to hear passionate, international, key-note speakers like Pulitzer prize winner, Liu Heung Shing from China, Pete Dobré from Australia and our very own Amos Chapple, share their stories and experience. You could also attend full workshops that include travelling to the Wairarapa or Kapiti Island, or half-day workshops taking sneak peaks behind the scenes at Te Papa or Imagelab, or catching the ferry to Matiu Somes Island. Places are limited for the workshops, so book soon.

And you’ll get to see the wonderful images accepted for the PSNZ Canon National Exhibition of Photography (NATEX) which KCPS is running.

The venue is in the very heart of Wellington and WPS has secured favourable rates at nearby hotels if you want to stay in town. Check out this list.

KCPS Comes Third in Bowron

Just a brief reminder for ticket-holders that our annual awards dinner starts with drinks at 7 pm tomorrow – Monday 26 November – at the Otaihanga Boating Club.

We’ve had a fantastic response for this final KCPS event of the year. There will be more than 60 people to enjoy dinner, judging of the “best of year” images by Simon Woolf, and presentation of trophies and certificates. See you there!

We had a good attendance of 30 people at the AGM, for a short formal session (19 minutes) then lots of socialising over refreshments, and the Matiu/Somes Island AV.
