Checking out the Otaihanga Boating Club

31 Monday Oct 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, News

Almost 25 members and family turned up during Sunday afternoon to check out the planned new venue for our meetings – the Otaihanga Boating Club.

It was a glorious afternoon, with Ian on the BBQ churning out sausages and onions, which were happily consumed in bread with Karyn’s special sauces, and washed down with liquid refreshments.

The setting is impressive, and even comes with built-in photographic opportunities – just imagine the sunsets from here.

The interior is spacious and suitable for our meetings .. it even includes a built-in overhead projector. However some thought will be needed on how best to display prints for our salons.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon, and all those who came were very positive and supportive of the planned move to this venue next year.

We were up at 4 am in order to be out at the Cape Kidnappers Gannets Colony just before sunrise. It’s a beautiful morning and a wondrous sight.

KCPS Success at Central Region

07 Friday Oct 2011

Shona Jaray and I are at the PSNZ Central Region Convention – Expect the Unexpected – being hosted by the Stratford Camera Club.

We were thrilled to learn this evening that the KCPS Print Set won the inter-club competition for prints.  Congratulations to the following six Kapiti Coast Photographic Society members:

  1. Shona Jaray – “Sparsely Populated”
  2. Katie Beddek – “Blue, Green and Wharf”
  3. Hugh Scott – “Pastoral Panel”
  4. Carol Molineux – “Tarn Ridge”
  5. Peter Beddek – “Harbour Sunbeams”
  6. Neil Gordon – “Orkney Vista”
KCPS didn’t do quite so well in the interclub Digital Image competition. The new Aotearoa Philippines Photographic Society had a well-deserved win in that competition, with some stunning images.
But wait, there’s more. We have also had some individual successes:

Neil Gordon's "Orkney Vista" won Champion Print for the Interclub Print Sets competition.

Shona Jaray's "Catching the Light" won 1st prize for the Open Prints Section.

Shona Jaray's "Coalpit Dam" won 1st prize for the Open Digital Image section

Neil Gordon's "Arctic Tern" came 2nd in the Nature Digital Images.

Report on Postprocessing Meeting 6 Sep 2011

06 Tuesday Sep 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, Useful Links

≈ Comments Off on Report on Postprocessing Meeting 6 Sep 2011

We had another successful session, with a lucky thirteen members along.  Much of the evening was spent discussing how best to create good images.

This can start with something that catches your eye, but then making a good image out of it means capturing and conveying what you found attractive about it to start with.  This should be photographed clearly, without distracting or cluttered backgrounds.

A good  image will be:

  • meaningful and tell some kind of story
  • well composed
  • good technically (e.g., without blown highlights or poor focus)

In terms of composition, we worked through and discussed an excellent set of 10 Top Photography Composition Rules – bearing in mind that rules are really only guidelines, and are sometimes there to be broken. The example shown from that site illustrates the well-known “rule of thirds”.

Another useful link discussed was an online calculator  for calculating depth of field and hyperfocal distances for many different cameras.

All in all it was a very informative session.  Thanks to Rod, Murray, Peter and Hugh who are doing an excellent job organising these sessions.

The next meeting on Tuesday 4 October will be a photoshoot session in downtown Waikanae (Mahara Place).  Stay tuned for more details, which will be available soon on the Events Calendar.

Wellington Interclub Print Battle 2011

27 Saturday Aug 2011

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report

≈ Comments Off on Wellington Interclub Print Battle 2011

Three of our members made it to the Karori Arts and Craft Centre on a cold winter’s evening (17 August, just after the big snow) to represent KCPS at the annual Wellington Interclub Print Battle. What we lacked in numbers we made up for in enthusiasm. Our Society was doing great after the first six of ten categories, with a clear lead in first place. Unfortunately, after that we faded, and finished up in fourth place out of six clubs.

Wellington Photographic Society won, with a total of 27 points (low is good). The next few places were very close. Kapiti Camera Club and the Karori Camera Club tied for second place with 33 points. We were just one behind with 34 points, followed by Hutt Camera Club on 36 points. This was the first year that Aotearoa Philippines Photographic Society joined us. They only competed in four of the categories (doing very well in those) and ended up with 48 points.

Thanks to Karori Camera Club for hosting the event, and to Bruce Girdwood who was an excellent and thoughtful judge as always.

Finally, here are the two images that did best for us.

Arrivals and Departures by Carol Molineux from KCPS came first in the "Cosmopolitan" category

Market Street by Neil Gordon from KCPS topped the "Shadow" category
