PSNZ Central Regional Salon Success

17 Tuesday Nov 2015

Posted by rachelstevens01 in News

≈ Comments Off on PSNZ Central Regional Salon Success

Overall as individuals KCPS members did exceptionally well.

Unfortunately we didn’t get a club set placing, New Plymouth getting first place for their print set and Wellington winning the digital set. There were no other placing’s given for second and third due to the small number of club sets received.

Gavin Klee received the Stratford cup for champion print from the club sets entered into the interclub print competition.

Carol Molineux received the Bruce Harding cup for champion nature projected image entered in the central region individual salon.

Also 3rd place for nature print, a highly commended and a commended.

2 commended images in Open print

1 commended digital image in People

Alison Viskovic

3rd place Open digital projected images and a highly commended

People 1 commended digital image

Rhonda Billington

Highly commended digital nature

All entries sent were accepted and shown at the convention salon.

It was a very stimulating programme with interesting speakers. Tony Carter spoke of his experiences photographing the people of Ohura and shared insights in to their lives. We had a telephone link to Scott base in Antarctica following Anthony Powell’s pre recorded presentation so we could ask him questions. He was back down there for the summer season as communications officer. He showed us some delightful footage of problems doing time lapse photography from ice melt (the tripod falling over), to Adele penguins being very inquisitive and kicking the camera.

Other highlights were Jeremy Beckers, David Sinclair and Leith Robertson showing us some stunning low light and astrophotography images. Thomas Busby showed us how he processed some of his award winning photographs in Lightroom which was very educational. We were also enlightened on Drone photography and the increasing regulations relating to the use of these. Trevor Pinfold gave two informative workshops on nature photography and showed us images of his trip to photograph Orangatans in Summatra.

The weather was great for our 5.30 am shoot at the Te Rewa Rewa bridge in New Plymouth. Overall it was a really interesting convention.

KCPS Interclub Successes

23 Wednesday Sep 2015

Posted by KCPS in Competitions, Meeting Report, News

≈ Comments Off on KCPS Interclub Successes

KCPS has done well in two recent competitions.

George Chance – 2nd for NZ

George Chance Cup – only just beyond our grasp!

We entered a set of four prints for the George Chance Interclub Print Competition for landscapes.  I’m pleased to say that KCPS came second.

Congratulations to Jo Goudsblom, Gavin Klee, Carol Molineux and Rachel Stevens whose prints were used for our entry.

Thanks also to Alison Viskovic for her hard work in printing and matting the set.  We won’t show the (stunning) print set publicly online just now, because some prints may be used for other club entries.

Wellington Interclub Print Battle – 2nd

Another 2nd for this interclub print competition, that took place in Petone on Tuesday 8 September.  Well done to Peter Ellis, Neil Gordon, Jo Goudsblom, Carol Molineux, Hugh Scott and Alison Viskovic whose prints were used, after being selected at our KCPS meeting on 10 August.

Eight club members were there for the live judging. We were apparently in a three-way tie for first half-way through, but ended up just pipped at the post (by one point?) at the end.  The winner was the Aotearoa Philippines Photographic Society, who will also be the host next year.

Kapiti News Photography Article

21 Friday Aug 2015

Posted by KCPS in News

KCPS member Chrissy Garlick wrote this very interesting article, which appeared on page 30 of the 19 August 2015 edition of the Kapiti News. It looks into the history of a photography which was made by Mike Martin, who is also a KCPS member.  Wilf Wright also used to be a member of the former Waikanae Camera Club, which later became KCPS. And one one final KCPS connection, the photo of the photo with Wilf is by Alison Viskovic, the current President of KCPS.

Click on the image below to enlarge the article. The text is still small and may be a bit hard to read. Fortunately, the Kapiti News can be read online, though be aware that you need to use a Flash plugin.

≈ Comments Off on 2015 Natex Results for KCPS

Results for the PSNZ National Exhibition (Natex) have just been advised. KCPS will be very well represented at the exhibition in Tauranga.   Ten of our members have had a total of 27 images accepted.  That’s up on last year when we had six members gain 25 acceptances.

Special congratulations to Alison Viskovic, who won the Shirley Peverill Trophy & PSNZ Gold Medal for Best Photojournalism Print for “Burger-Fed Locals”, and to Carol Molineux for her Honours Medal in Open Prints for “Facing the Storm”.

These are the KCPS members who had acceptances in Natex. (I think I have them all – sincere apologies if I missed any.)

  • Alison Viskovic – 2 (including Gold Medal)
  • Carol Molineux – 5 (including Honours Ribbon)
  • Gavin Klee – 7
  • Hugh Scott – 2
  • Katie Beddek – 1
  • Neil Gordon – 5
  • Rhonda Billington – 1
  • Roger Smith – 1
  • Shona Jaray – 2 (Shona also contributed as a selector for Open Digital, so couldn’t enter that section!)
  • Susie Whelan – 1

Well done everyone.  Don’t forget that it’s not too late to register for the PSNZ National Convention and Exhibition, in Tauranga from 29 April to 3 May. It would be great to see lots of KCPS members there. Check out the website http://exploringpixels.nz for all the details.

Report on Tabletop Photography Workshop, etc.

13 Friday Mar 2015

Posted by KCPS in Meeting Report, News

≈ Comments Off on Report on Tabletop Photography Workshop, etc.

Monday 9 March 2015 saw the whole meeting given over to a Tabletop Workshop. Jo Goudsbloom, Hugh Scott, Gill Mackersy, Gavin Klee and Alison Viskovic set up tables where they demonstrated ways of arranging different backgrounds and subject matter, and using various sorts of lighting.

Lighting included hobby lamps used with a light tent, ordinary table lamps, a more professional Bowens light setup, daylight bulbs from a copy stand, and an LED torch. Props included fruit and veg, driftwood, ornaments and glassware, Alison’s illusions materials, and some eggs and plastic netting.

People circulated round the tables through the evening, helped each other with ideas and techniques, and there was lots of photographic conversation. 22 people had a very enjoyable evening.  Thanks to Alison for the report on the meeting,  and to Alison, Jo and Bob for the photos below showing some of the action.

Op Shopping

KCPS member Chrissy Garlick featured in an article in this week’s Kapiti News, explaining what she found out about the background to three local Op Shops – Opportunity for Animals, Birthright Kapiti, and the Waikanae Baptist Church.

The Salt of the Earth

KCPS member Karyn Crocker recently saw this movie at local cinema the Shoreline, about the life and work of photojournalist Sebastião Salgado, and thoroughly recommends it.
