Meeting Report – 11 August 2014

12 Tuesday Aug 2014

≈ Comments Off on Meeting Report – 11 August 2014

The weather was almost enough to keep me home last night, but I was glad that I did venture out in the torrential rain and gale to go to our KCPS meeting. Around twenty of us enjoyed three interesting presentations:

Focus on Fun

Paul Witham from the Hutt Camera Club told us all about the Central Region Convention which they will host at Silverstream from 7-9 November.  See the full details on their website. It does indeed sound like lots of fun, with great speakers and workshops and field trips.  Register soon to get the early bird rate and make sure you have your pick of the workshops. I have.

Hal Gimperson

It was fascinating to see the range of photographic prints from Hal, who is a new KCPS member, having joined in April.  Some examples are shown below – a textural detail from a railway engine at Paekakariki; a solarized monochrome print; and one of a number of beautiful matt prints where Hal took a narrow vertical slice of a colourful sunset over the Kapiti Coast, and then expanded it horizontally to a panoramic format.

 Ian Linning

Our President also gave a very interesting presentation on his photography – covering three themes. First were some examples of street photography from when he lived in Singapore; second was sharing some examples and experiences of his commercial photography business Primofoto; and third was a short video of a trip to Italy where the images were all taken on a very travel-friendly Canon G10, and “Ken Burns” panning was used to good effect. Some imagery examples are also shown below.

I do have to say that Bruce Girdwood did a great job of judging the entries for the Frank Hinchcliff Memorial Trophy on 28 July.  The winner was, um, Neil Gordon, for the print “Edge Effect”.  Carol Molineux was runner up with her print “Searching for Food” of a Buller’s Mollymawk.

Bruce reminded us that in evaluating images he was looking for Intent, Style, and Technical competence.  He went on to update us on his own photographic journey – it is fascinating each year when he visits KCPS to see his own development, and where his image making is going.

For Bruce it is very much not “What am I going to photograph?”, but “Why am I going to photograph?”; he is making a visual diary off his experiences primarily for his own benefit. His imagery is inspiring.

Member’s Exhibition Monday 11 August

Two members – Ian Linning and Hal Gimperson – will talk about their interest in photography and show some of their work at our next KCPS meeting on Monday.

This is also the deadline for your entries for the Winter Salon.

Online entries can be made at https://kcps.org.nz/salon-entry-form/ with a deadline of 5 pm on Monday.

Richard Young Speaking; Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

22 Sunday Jun 2014

≈ Comments Off on Richard Young Speaking; Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

Our guest speaker at the KCPS Meeting on Monday 23 June is Richard Young. Richard’s talk is entitled “African Wildlife and Landscape Photography”. You can see some of his work on his website, and we understand he will be bringing along some of his prints to share.

If you’re interested in Nature and Landscape work this will be well worth making the time to attend.

Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

The annual Frank Hinchcliff competition is in honour of one of the founders and first President of the Waikanae Camera Club, the forerunner to our Kapiti Coast Photographic Society. The July 2009 KCPS newsletter included an article on Frank Hinchcliff written by Hugh Scott, which is also available as a one-pager and well worth a read.

The rules for the Frank Hinchcliff competition are simple (and available as part of our overall competition rules via https://kcps.org.nz/membership/ as a pdf)”

“For the Frank Hinchcliff competition in June or July a member can submit one or two Prints. As with the Salons, there is no set theme. The entries must not have been submitted to a previous KCPS Salon or Frank Hinchcliff competition. The images must also have been captured within the last two years.”

To enter – just bring your one or two matted prints along in an envelope, together with a sheet of paper giving your name and the titles, to the KCPS meeting on Monday 14 July.  The competition will be judged by Bruce Girdwood on Monday 28 July.

More Digital Entries Need for Wellington Interclub

Selecting the Triptych Print

Selecting the Triptych Print

The dismal weather meant attendance was down a bit last evening for our competition selection for the Wellington Interclub to be held at the end of August.  Full details of this year’s competition are at http://wic.org.nz/2014.

We did manage to select five prints for the subjects of panorama, abstract, triptych, portrait and monochromatic. .

However, we need more entries for the five very general digital image categories of emotion, natural, active, fluid and situation. We’ll need to take along up to twenty (20) images for each of those categories, so that we can choose the best match on the night when the exact topic for each category is announced.

Please email Ian Linning any additional digital images you want to be considered – specifying what category they apply to. Images should be max of 1920 pixels wide, max of 1080 pixels high, sRGB space. We’d like them by the end of this coming weekend please (18 June). Thanks.

2014 Autumn Salon Results

30 Friday May 2014

≈ Comments Off on 2014 Autumn Salon Results

Our judge for the KCPS 2014 Autumn Salon last Monday was our very own President, Ian Linning.

We had an excellent attendance of around 40 members to hear Ian’s thorough and constructive appraisals of all the images. Thanks to Ian for doing this.

The 29 available Highly Commended and Honours images can be seen in the 2014 Autumn Salon Gallery which is now online.  It was good to see Rhonda Billington receive her first Highly Commended for her Novice Print “Castle Point Lighthouse” – not taken on our recent trip!

After the judging, we watched a 5 minute audiovisual of images from some of those who had been on the very successful field trip to Castlepoint the previous weekend, and viewed some further submissions for the Waikanae Estuary exhibition.  The deadline for this has now been extended to next Monday 9 June – see details here on the website . And don’t forget you have until Saturday (tomorrow) night 31 May to submit images for our club set for the Trenna Packer – details on this blog post.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, but don’t forget that Development Group will meet as usual for the first Monday of the month on 2 June. The advertised topic is “Low Light and Fill in Flash Photography”.

Our oldest member (and New Zealand’s oldest resident) Peg Griffin celebrated her 110th birthday today. Wow. Congratulations from everybody at the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society.

Check out today’s celebration (at Cookies in Paraparaumu Beach) in a TVNZ item from this evening’s news, and yesterday’s item from the Dominion Post.

Submit Nature Images for Trenna Packer by 31 May Please

20 Tuesday May 2014

Posted by KCPS in Competitions

The Trenna Packer Nature Competition, run by the Nature Photography Society of NZ (based in Christchurch) is coming up again very soon.

We need six images in total from KCPS.  No more than two images can come from an individual KCPS member.  The key points of the rules are:

  • The subject matter must be nature as defined by the definition in the rules, which excludes cultivated plants, domestic animals and confined animals
  • The subject matter is restricted to New Zealand and its offshore islands.
  • Each entry is judged as a ‘set’ not as individual images (so there is no point in having six fantastic images just of birds)
  • Digital images should be saved as jpeg, sRGB colour space, with a max of 1400 pixels on the horizontal side and 1050 on the vertical side for portrait and at a file size between 400Kb and 1Mb
  • Entries are due by 20 June 2043.

Carol Molineux has kindly agreed to coordinate our KCPS entry for this competition.  We’re asking members to submit up to six images each for consideration by a group which will be convened by Carol.

Please use this online form to submit your images (no more than six) by 31 May 2014. Remember that we need a diverse set of images to choose from.

We look forward to receiving and considering your submissions. By way of example of what we need to strive for, check out the gallery of previous winners.

Thanks.
