KCPS Programme for 2014

16 Sunday Feb 2014

Posted by KCPS in Calendar, Meeting Report, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on KCPS Programme for 2014

If you go to our home page at http://kcps.org.nz, in the left-hand sidebar you’ll see a short list of the next events coming up.  There are  some oddities just now about WordPress interaction with Google Calendar, so you may see some duplicates. Sorry. The calendar itself is ok.

That embedded calendar, and another full list of events, is available at https://kcps.org.nz/events/ .

If you want, you can subscribe to the KCPS Google Calendar of events, so any changes automatically update in your own calendar system.  Instructions were posted in August 2011. Check it out here. Please let me know how you get on, and if the instructions need updating.

Nick Ward II

Nick WardSpeaking of upcoming events, we’re delighted to say that Nick Ward will once again be our speaker at the next KCPS meeting on Monday 24 February.  He was very popular and entertaining when he spoke to us almost exactly a year ago.  See the brief report on that meeting.

This time around, his topic will be “Finding a suitable title for your image(s)” and is sure to be just as entertaining and informative. Don’t miss it.

Report on Chris Helliwell Presentation

Unfortunately I had to miss this presentation last week.  Ian Linning reports that there were around 35 members there, and that Chris made these key points about Nature Photography:

  • Patience! – Wait, Wait and then Wait longer
  • Shoot at your subject’s eye level (You’ll be prone 90% of the time)
  • Know your kit well
  • Have an image objective in mind before you go out rather than wait for the image to come along

There were lots of questions and then one-to-one discussions over tea and coffee. Chris had brought along 18 kg of gear (!) and eagerly demonstrated items on a one to one basis.

Big Birthday, and Upcoming Events

25 Saturday May 2013

≈ Comments Off on Big Birthday, and Upcoming Events

Happy Birthday Peg

A very happy birthday to our oldest member – Peg Griffin, who is now 109!

There was a very nice story on her in the Dominion Post.

Upcoming Events

Some changes have been made to the website to make it clearer what events are coming up.  If you look in the left-hand sidebar of http://kcps.org.nz you’ll see details for the next five events.  If you click on EVENTS in the top menu, you’ll see an embedded calendar with the current month (which is very configruable to show other months, etc.) as well as a full list of upcoming events beneath it.

These events change from time to time, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for any changes.  You can also subscribe to the calendar of upcoming events using the instructions that were posted when it was originally set up. Then your own calendar system will always be up to date.

Speaking of upcoming events ….

Meeting Monday 27 May

The next event is, of course, the meeting on Monday 27 May when our regular judge Bruce Girdwood will be judging our Autumn Salon. We’ll also be showing a short AV with photos provided by many of those who went on the field trip to Ohakune last weekend. We had a blast, and made some great images, as you will see.

No Development Group Meeting 3 June

Because it is Queen’s Birthday, there won’t be a Development Group meeting. So you’ll have more time to get organised to bring along prints and images for the following week …

Competition Selection Night – Monday 10 June

Our main task will be to select ten prints for the Wellington Interclub Print Battle. Our club will be hosting it at the Otaihanga Boating Club on Monday 5 August (in lieu of a Development Group meeting), so it’s important we do well! The ten topics are:

  1. Beams
  2. Contained
  3. Eggs
  4. Eye
  5. Feathered
  6. Movement
  7. Mysterious
  8. Skin
  9. Reaching
  10. Terraced

You’ll need to bring along prints that could be suitable.  They need not be matted at this stage, but should be large enough to have a good look at (at least around A4 – not 4 by 6).  We’ll use the whole club to review and select the best print for each topic in turn.

On that night we’d also like to review digital images and prints and digital images that could be entered as part of two club sets for the Bowron and Chance interclub landscape competitions. We need four images for each set.  Again, prints need not have been matted just yet.  It’s proposed that we try to build sets around a “Kapiti Coast” theme so that each Kapiti Island does appear in each image, so you still have time to make some on that theme if you haven’t already.

Natex Last Steps – Autumn Salon Entries Due for Monday Meeting

Karyn Packing Natex

Karyn Packing Natex packages

Our Natex project is almost all over, although there’s a lot of tidying up of finances and reporting now.

Support from many KCPS members for Natex through its many phases has been fantastic. We had another long day yesterday at the Te Horo Hall to repack all the prints into 109 boxes and packages, for dispatch back to the entrants. Thanks to Hugh, Karyn, Jo, Gary, Alan, Peter Ellis, and Jenny for helping out on this phase, as well as all those who helped mount the exhibition last Wednesday and then dismount it on Sunday.

Monday Meeting

Ou regular meeting at 7:30 pm at OBC next Monday 13 May will cover what happened at the PSNZ Convention last week. For a bit of a preview, you can see my seven “running commentary” blog entries at blog.photography.org.nz. Don’t forget that entries for the Autumn Salon are also due – go to this link on our website. The judge for this Salon is Bruce Girdwood.

Illusion No. 5 - (c)Alison Viskovic

Illusion No. 5 – (c)Alison Viskovic

Hi everyone – the programme for 2013 is about to get underway. You can check out the calendar for the year here or by going to the EVENTS menu item at the top of the KCPS web site.

Our first meeting for the year will be at 7:30 pm on Monday 11 February at the usual venue, the Otaihanga Boating Club. The featured speaker will be our vice President, Alison Viskovic APSNZ, who will give a presentation entitled “A Photographic Autobiography”.

Alison did very well in the recent Dunedin Festival of Photography, receiving honours for her image shown here – “Illusion No 5”. It will be good to see more of her work.

We’ll also be seeking people to help out with the PSNZ National Exhibition of Photography (NATEX) which KCPS is running this year.  Don’t forget to get your own entries in (that’s fine) – see details at kcps.org.nz/natex2013.

If you were considering going for PSNZ Honours, now is the time as well.  See details about Honours on the PSNZ blog.

Finally, the PSNZ National Convention this year is as close as it can get – down in Wellington. There’s lots of information at http://positivelyphotography.org.nz – check it out and consider registering for what is always a fantastic experience. Early bird pricing is available until the end of February.

Events – Monday 11 June and Thursday 14 June

02 Saturday Jun 2012

Posted by KCPS in Calendar, Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Events – Monday 11 June and Thursday 14 June

We have been fortunate to have a special offer for a guest speaker on Monday 11 June. This will replace the critique session that was to be at that meeting on topics 6-10 of the Wellington Interclub Print Battle to be held in August. Selection for our club set for the Interclub Print Battle will still take place at the KCPS meeting on 25 June.

Our guest speaker is Debra Glasgow, who is a Wildlife Photographer and Cetacean Researcher. Debra has had 12 seasons in Antartica, on two of which she has over wintered.

She works on icebreaker research ships and has photographed around the entire waters of Antartica. She has been based in Australia for the past 25 years and has worked on documentation of whale species around this coast.

Should be a fantastic talk and images.

(Don’t forget you can always check the latest programme by going to EVENTS on the top menu of http://kcps.org.nz .)

But since it can also be useful to have a one-pager with an overview of the year – here it is as a pdf file.

The first event is tonight – hope to see you there soon.

Monday, Monday – 13 February – First Meeting of 2012

09 Thursday Feb 2012

Just look at that view from the deck of The Boat Shed at the Otaihanga Boating Club. That’s what we’ll be enjoying with the first meeting of the year – 7:30 pm on Monday.

Yes – MONDAY – we’ve changed our regular meeting night to Monday, not Tuesday. Don’t be a day late! (And you’re likely to be very lonely if you go to our previous venue at the church hall in Waikanae by mistake.)

The main event will be a Members Exhibition with three of our members informally sharing some of their images and interest in photography. We look forward to seeing you there.

Don’t forget that subscriptions for this year are due now – Ian Linning will happily take your money at the meeting, or you can use Internet Banking. Details of the bank account are on the new member application form on our Membership Page.

Finally, when considering images, don’t forget the importance of content. This cartoon hilariously makes the point, from one of my favourite web comic sites – xkcd.com.
