Richard Young Speaking; Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

22 Sunday Jun 2014

≈ Comments Off on Richard Young Speaking; Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

Our guest speaker at the KCPS Meeting on Monday 23 June is Richard Young. Richard’s talk is entitled “African Wildlife and Landscape Photography”. You can see some of his work on his website, and we understand he will be bringing along some of his prints to share.

If you’re interested in Nature and Landscape work this will be well worth making the time to attend.

Frank Hinchcliff Competition Coming Up

The annual Frank Hinchcliff competition is in honour of one of the founders and first President of the Waikanae Camera Club, the forerunner to our Kapiti Coast Photographic Society. The July 2009 KCPS newsletter included an article on Frank Hinchcliff written by Hugh Scott, which is also available as a one-pager and well worth a read.

The rules for the Frank Hinchcliff competition are simple (and available as part of our overall competition rules via https://kcps.org.nz/membership/ as a pdf)”

“For the Frank Hinchcliff competition in June or July a member can submit one or two Prints. As with the Salons, there is no set theme. The entries must not have been submitted to a previous KCPS Salon or Frank Hinchcliff competition. The images must also have been captured within the last two years.”

To enter – just bring your one or two matted prints along in an envelope, together with a sheet of paper giving your name and the titles, to the KCPS meeting on Monday 14 July.  The competition will be judged by Bruce Girdwood on Monday 28 July.

2014 Autumn Salon Results

30 Friday May 2014

≈ Comments Off on 2014 Autumn Salon Results

Our judge for the KCPS 2014 Autumn Salon last Monday was our very own President, Ian Linning.

We had an excellent attendance of around 40 members to hear Ian’s thorough and constructive appraisals of all the images. Thanks to Ian for doing this.

The 29 available Highly Commended and Honours images can be seen in the 2014 Autumn Salon Gallery which is now online.  It was good to see Rhonda Billington receive her first Highly Commended for her Novice Print “Castle Point Lighthouse” – not taken on our recent trip!

After the judging, we watched a 5 minute audiovisual of images from some of those who had been on the very successful field trip to Castlepoint the previous weekend, and viewed some further submissions for the Waikanae Estuary exhibition.  The deadline for this has now been extended to next Monday 9 June – see details here on the website . And don’t forget you have until Saturday (tomorrow) night 31 May to submit images for our club set for the Trenna Packer – details on this blog post.

Enjoy your holiday weekend, but don’t forget that Development Group will meet as usual for the first Monday of the month on 2 June. The advertised topic is “Low Light and Fill in Flash Photography”.

Castle Point Field Trip

There’s 15 of us on this weekend’s field trip. After sunset photos, then a congenial pot luck dinner in front of a roaring fire, many of us were up at 6 am to enjoy the early light at the lighthouse. Here’s Carol and Alison at the top viewpoint.

Autumn Salon Online Entries Close 5 pm Monday

09 Friday May 2014

≈ Comments Off on Autumn Salon Online Entries Close 5 pm Monday

A reminder that online entries will close at 5 pm sharp on Monday 12 May. This is so that they can all be compiled and handed in at the meeting starting at 7:30 pm that night.  Go to https://kcps.org.nz/salon-entry-form/ to submit your entry.

The meeting on Monday evening will be about recent PSNZ National Convention, held in Blenheim.  I’ll give a talk about how it all went, but also invite others from the club who attended to comment as well.

Last Development Group Meeting 5 May – Workflows

Hugh Scott did a great presentation to around 15 members all about general workflows for adding and processing new images from your camera, focussing on Capture NX2 (for Nikon).  I followed up with some details on the workflow for Lightroom 5.  For an overview, this video from Adobe might be helpful.  The “Digital Asset Management” book by Peter Krogh was also mentioned – here’s a link to his site which has various resources plus books for sale.

Last KCPS Meeting 28 April – Alison Viskovic FPSNZ and Waikanae Estuary

Alison Viskovic FPSNZ

Alison Viskovic FPSNZ

It was really interesting to hear from Alison all about her journey to create her set, and be successful in gaining an FPSNZ.

We also had a slide show of almost 100 images that have been submitted so far for consideration for our August Waikanae Estuary Exhibition at the Paraparaumu Library.  Further images will be most welcome, and can be submitted via https://kcps.org.nz/waikanae-estuary-exhibition/. The deadline is 26 May.

This was followed by a short talk from a guest, Mik Peryer, who literally wrote the book about the Estuary.  He related the love story of Thomas and Henrietta. Thanks, Mik.

PSNZ Honours – and Meeting Monday 28 April – and PJ Ethics

22 Tuesday Apr 2014

≈ Comments Off on PSNZ Honours – and Meeting Monday 28 April – and PJ Ethics

Congratulations to Alison Viskovic, who has been successful in gaining her Fellowship of PSNZ (FPSNZ). Alison will be formally presented with her award this Saturday at the PSNZ National Convention.

“Hand Lady of the Forest” (c) Heather Feary

At the Convention her granddaughter Heather Feary will also receive the Ronald D Woolf Youth Award & PSNZ Silver medal for her image “Hand Lady of the Forest” which was the best print by an under 25 year old for the PSNZ Canon National Exhibition (Natex).  Heather’s image is on the right – you can see this plus other awarded Natex images in this blog post and also this blog post.

Alison played an important role in encouraging Heather and getting her to enter, as noted in this recent news story.

Meeting Monday 28 April

At Monday’s meeting Alison will show her fellowship set and explain how she produced it.  We will also see a slide show of the images that members have submitted for the Waikanae Estuary exhibition.  So far there have been around 100, which is excellent. But we still need lots more, so get snapping and submitting by the deadline of 26 May.

Photojournalism Ethics (Image Manipulation)

Thanks to Catherine Strong for her talk to KCPS last Monday which did indeed prove to be very interesting.  She started by distinguishing between a Journalism Photo (part of a story, perhaps a head and shoulders image of a newsmaker), versus Photojournalism where the photo tells the story by itself, perhaps aided by a descriptive caption.

Another important distinction is between Editing and Manipulation of an image.

Editing corrects problems in HOW the photo was made (e.g., too light, red eye problems, too wide a frame), and should result in something which is more or less the same as seen by the naked eye at that time.

Manipulation corrects or alters things in the actual scene (e.g., more smoke from a fire, different background, re-position a ball, remove a video camera, remove markings on a baby’s toy).  Manipulation results in something which is different from what was seen by others there at the time. In general this is a no-no for photojournalism.

Catherine showed lots of examples to illustrate her points, and her talk was very well received.

≈ Comments Off on KCPS Meeting Monday 14 April – Digital Photo Ethics

Our speaker for Monday’s meeting is Dr Catherine Strong, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Massey University School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing.

Catherine will be talking about the challenges of digital photo ethics. She says that “We can discuss and debate my criteria for differentiating ethical vs unethical editing.”

This promises to be an interesting session – don’t miss it!

Waikanae Estuary Exhibition – Images Wanted

"Waikanae Beach Textures" - Highly Commended, Advanced Print - ©Hugh Scott

“Waikanae Beach Textures” –  ©Hugh Scott

The time has come to start submitting the wonderful images that members have been taking at the Estuary.

Full details about the Waikanae Estuary Exhibition project are on our website here.

Images can be submitted for consideration until 26 May 2014. Either submit digital images (one at a time) online at this link, or bring along prints (minimum A4 sized) to a KCPS meeting and give them to Carol Molineux.

Images submitted online need to be in full resolution so that we can evaluate how well they will print.

At the beginning of each KCPS meeting the images that have been submitted in the previous fortnight will be viewed so we can all see the images being produced. The final date for submissions will be Monday 26 May.

Selection of the images for the exhibition will be done at the end of May.  The images selected will then all be printed and matted consistently, and form a documentary style Exhibition at the Paraparaumu Library from 17 to 29 August.

Meeting Monday March 10 – Summer Salon, Members Exhibition, PSNZ Membership

06 Thursday Mar 2014

Posted by KCPS in Reminder

≈ Comments Off on Meeting Monday March 10 – Summer Salon, Members Exhibition, PSNZ Membership

Salon Season is about to get underway for 2014.

Entries are due now for the KCPS Summer Salon.  Just click on SALON ENTRY in the top menu of kcps.org.nz or go straight to kcps.org.nz/salon-entry-form/. You’ll find a link there to the online submission system.  You can enter up to two digital entries and up to two prints.  Full details are provided with the online form.

Please get your entries in online as soon as possible. Online entries close at 5 PM on Monday. That’s because I need to compile a list of all the entries and provide them at the Monday evening meeting to Karyn.  You also need to bring along any prints to give to Karyn at the meeting; bring them in a large envelope, and include a printout of the email you received acknowledging your entry.

Members Exhibition

The main topic for Monday’s meeting is a Members Exhibition.  Shona Jaray and Chris McGinty will each show a selection of their images and talk about their passion for photography.

PSNZ Membership

If you aren’t already a member of PSNZ, Monday will also be a great time to join. (KCPS members have already been emailed about this.)

Shona Jaray (President PSNZ) will be accepting PSNZ Membership applications at the meeting.

NZ CAMERA THUMBNAIL[2]Those who join PSNZ at the meeting on Monday will immediately receive a copy of New Zealand Camera 2014. This is a fantastic publication, high quality, with great images, four of which are from KCPS members (Alison Viskovic, Michael Martin, Shona Jaray and Neil Gordon). One of the benefits of PSNZ membership is that you’ll be eligible later this year to submit images to be considered for New Zealand Camera 2015. Joining PSNZ will bring many other benefits to you, as well as KCPS.

KCPS Programme for 2014

16 Sunday Feb 2014

≈ Comments Off on KCPS Programme for 2014

If you go to our home page at http://kcps.org.nz, in the left-hand sidebar you’ll see a short list of the next events coming up.  There are  some oddities just now about WordPress interaction with Google Calendar, so you may see some duplicates. Sorry. The calendar itself is ok.

That embedded calendar, and another full list of events, is available at https://kcps.org.nz/events/ .

If you want, you can subscribe to the KCPS Google Calendar of events, so any changes automatically update in your own calendar system.  Instructions were posted in August 2011. Check it out here. Please let me know how you get on, and if the instructions need updating.

Nick Ward II

Nick WardSpeaking of upcoming events, we’re delighted to say that Nick Ward will once again be our speaker at the next KCPS meeting on Monday 24 February.  He was very popular and entertaining when he spoke to us almost exactly a year ago.  See the brief report on that meeting.

This time around, his topic will be “Finding a suitable title for your image(s)” and is sure to be just as entertaining and informative. Don’t miss it.

Report on Chris Helliwell Presentation

Unfortunately I had to miss this presentation last week.  Ian Linning reports that there were around 35 members there, and that Chris made these key points about Nature Photography:

  • Patience! – Wait, Wait and then Wait longer
  • Shoot at your subject’s eye level (You’ll be prone 90% of the time)
  • Know your kit well
  • Have an image objective in mind before you go out rather than wait for the image to come along

There were lots of questions and then one-to-one discussions over tea and coffee. Chris had brought along 18 kg of gear (!) and eagerly demonstrated items on a one to one basis.
