2015 Programme

Hi everyone.

A reminder that you can always found out the latest details of our upcoming programme and events at https://kcps.org.nz/events/

(c) Neil Gordon

The year is already off to a good start with several meetups. (Thanks to Rachel Stevens for organising these!)  I managed to get to the first one at Pukerua Bay (along with around twenty other photographers). There’s lots of photos posted – have a look.

The next meetup is on Sunday 8 February – “Welcome to Taylorville” – check out all the details here, and come along and join us.

The formal programme for KCPS will kick off on Monday 9 February at 7:30 pm, with a talk by Carol Molineux on ““Recent Journeys into the Arctic Regions of Svalbard and Iceland”.  She has some great images from a unique area that few get the opportunity to visit. Not to be missed.

Summer Salon – Set Themes

Entries for the first salon for the year are due on 9 March.  Please note that the Committee has decided to change the format this year, so that the first three salons will include set themes as well as open images. The updated rules for the 2015 competition can be downloaded here.

For the Summer Salon, you can enter one open digital image, and one on the theme of “Let’s Make Music“. For prints, you can enter one open print and one on the theme of “Intimate Moments“.  Make use of this gorgeous summer weather to get out and about to make images on these themes – which also correspond to two of the topics for the Wellington Interclub print battle later in the year. So we are hoping that this will result in a good selection of images to choose from for that.

Exhibition

Finally – there’s an exhibition of work by Yvonne Todd at the City Gallery in Wellington until 1 March that may be of interest. Check out http://www.citygallery.org.nz/exhibitions/yvonne-todd-creamy-psychology .

NEW Photography Meetup Group

Good afternoon Everyone.

I’m very excited to announce the launch of our new field trip group on meetup.com

This is where we will notify members of weekend excursions throughout the year (it will also be updated on our website calendar), this group is totally informal and you are more than welcome to bring a friend along. The aim of the group is to get everyone out and about with their camera, mingle with other members and most importantly have FUN! If you have any suggestions of where you might like to go for a field trip, there is a suggestion link on the home page of meetup.com.

Very shortly you will all receive an email from me that looks like this….

Meetup Email

Please sign up if you would like to be notified of up and coming field trips, any anything else to do with photography.

Look forward to seeing you all at the first meetup in mid Janurary.

Have a great weekend,

Rach

Based on portfolio submissions, Gill Mackersy and Rhonda Billington have also been promoted from Novice to Intermediate from 2015.

Well done all.

PSNZ Central Regional Salon Success

Not only did all those who went to the PSNZ Central Regional Convention in Silverstream have a wonderful time, but I came home with my car loaded up with three trophies for KCPS and its members.  I’ll bring them along to the AGM tomorrow night.

  1. KCPS came first in the Interclub Digital Competition, winning the Wanganui Cup.
  2. Alison Viskovic’s image “Communication” in our digital set won “Champion Interclub Digital Image”, so she was awarded the Heney Cup.
  3. KCPS came third in the Interclub Prints Competition. My print “Upper Antelope Canyon” in our KCPS set won “Champion Interclub Print”, so I was awarded the Stratford Cup.

Final Month Events and Details

We’re into the final month of activities for this year.  A rundown of what has already happened, and what is coming up:

Development Group – 3 November

We had a good attendance last night, and everyone (including me) learned more about how Lightroom can be used to input, organise and post-process images.

Best of Year Entries – Due by 10 November

These can be entered online now. You can enter via the SALON ENTRY menu item on our website, or go direct to http://www.jotform.co/KCPS/bestofyear.  Remember there are no grades for this final competition.  Any member can enter one digital image and one print but they must be the same (or based on) images which were entered in one of the four salons during the year.

Online entries must be in by 5 pm on Monday 10 November. Bring your print along to the AGM that evening.

AGM – 10 November

The  AGM will be held at 7:30 pm on Monday 10 November, at OBC.  Following the AGM we will show the AV of this year’s Laurie Thomas Landscape Competition.

Formal notice of the AGM was earlier sent to members, and further documents will be distributed.

For this meeting:

  • Don’t be shy about putting your name forward to join the Committee.  It is very rewarding to be involved in running our Society, and it’s always good to get new people with new ideas.  Please bring along your completed nomination form.
  • Please bring along your matted print for the Best of Year Entry, along with a printout of the online entry you made (or a note with your name and the print title).
  • We expect to have, for return to members, any unclaimed prints from the KCPS set or from individuals that were submitted to the PSNZ Central Region Salon being held this coming weekend at Silverstream.
  • Bring along up to two mounted (but unframed) prints you would like to display at the Kapiti Arts Trail (to be held on the weekend of 15-16 November), with a price indicated if they are available to sell. While we see this mainly as an opportunity to promote the club, visitors do also expect some works to be for sale.
  • Bring money to buy tickets for the EOY function ….

EOY FUNCTION – 24 November

This year’s venue for the EOY will be the Kapiti Club at 32 Marine Parade, Paraparaumu Beach.  The function will start at 7 pm. The esteemed John Boyd will be the judge for the Best of Year Competition, and other awards will be given.  This is always a great night – don’t miss it.

2014 Spring Salon & Development Group Meeting

All 22 images which received either Honours or Highly Commended in the 2014 Spring Salon from judge Lance Lawson can be viewed online.  Click on GALLERY in the main menu, or directly here.  Thanks to Lance for his helpful judging last night, and for showing some of his recent commercial work.

It’s really pleasing to see how well new(ish) members in the Novice grade are doing.  Gill Mackersy picked up an Honours for her print “Imperfect Beauty”, and Brian Holden had two Highly Commended digital images, once of which (“Intruder”) is shown below.

Congratulations to both Gill Mackersy and Rhonda Billington who will be promoted to the Intermediate grade in 2015, after submitting portfolios.  (See the rules for the 2014 competition and promotion here.) The points have yet to be counted for promotion from Intermediate to Advanced. We’ll announce any changes at the end of year function.

Development Group Monday – “Lightroom Workflow”

The final Development Group for the year will be at 7:30 pm on 3 November. The topic will be “Lightroom Workflow”.  Bring along some images (preferably RAW) on a thumb drive, for Neil Gordon to demonstrate how they can be improved using the tools available in Lightroom.

Two weeks to go until the APIX / PSNZ Central Regional….

It’s not too late – register now for an an informative and fun programme with like-minded photographers.
